Meet Michael Hamner, an architect, educator, and longtime community leader whose story starts in East LA and stays rooted right here in the SGV. He earned his architecture degree at University of Southern California and has spent decades building a career that blends design, teaching, and service in a way that actually changes what a community looks and feels like. 
If you have ever wondered how someone takes a non traditional path and still ends up shaping cities, this conversation is for you. Michael has taught in the East Los Angeles College Department of Architecture since the early 90s and helped generations of students transfer into accredited architecture programs and build real careers. His elevation to AIA Fellowship was a major moment for community college architecture education. 
We also talk about civic service and what it really means when people say design impacts quality of life. Michael served the Monterey Park Planning Commission and Design Review Board for over two decades, and he breaks down how projects, standards, and decisions shape a city’s identity one building at a time. 
And because this is MySGV, we get into basketball too. Michael has coached for decades, including years at Schurr High School, and he shares what coaching taught him about leadership, consistency, and building people, not just teams.

Sometimes that “quick update” turns into much more. New supply lines, relocated waste + gas, demo’d built-ins, fixed drywall, new floors, adjusted the pocket door (tile height strikes again 😅), fresh paint, baseboards, and casework. Just waiting on the last few pieces — casework, countertop, and new washer/dryer. Slow and steady!
