An Alamo Heights family detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will head home after a federal judge ordered their release from the South Texas Family Residential Center.
U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia on Wednesday ordered the federal government to release Maria Betania Uzcategui Castillo, her 11-year-old stepson Victor Labrador and her 8-year-old stepdaughter Victoria “Monserrat” Labrador no later than 9:30 a.m. Thursday, the Express-News reports.
Castillo and her stepchildren were detained by ICE agents outside their home while waiting for the school bus on April 27. Both Victor and Victoria were students at Alamo Heights ISD’s Cambridge Elementary School.
“Thank you to everyone who spoke up — your voice made a difference,” U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, who visited the family while they were being held in Dilley and advocated for their release, tweeted after news of the judge’s ruling broke.

POV: you get a backstage pass to San Antonio’s biggest food night 🎬🍽️
We went behind the scenes at San Antonio Flavor 2026 and honestly… nobody talks about what it actually takes to pull this off.
30+ restaurants. A live culinary showdown. The San Antonio Museum of Art as your dining room. All to raise money for the @safoodbank 🫶
Chef Geranimo Lopez @geroventex x @SAFoodBank + the team at @sacurrent showed us what it looks like when food meets purpose, and it hits different when you know the “why” behind every bite.
This city’s food scene is NOT playing around. 🤌

Thank you to everyone that attended the SA Current’s first ever editorial pop-up event during Flavor last week! Myself along with Yvette Ramierez of Market Square, Jen Beckmann of Re:Rooted 210, Elsewhere’s Terrin Fuhrmann and Drew Morros from Lowcountry had a great conversation about the troubles facing San Antonio’s small business community.
Of course, none of this would’ve been possible without our pop-up sponsors! Shout out to Period Modern for the amazing set up and beautiful furniture. You can find pieces like this and more on location at their store in Olmos Park. Special thanks to Bruno’s Dive Bar for supporting journalism and conversations like these that connect the community with local businesses.
Our Student Editorial Team did an amazing job producing an event like this – the first of its kind! For internships opportunities like this, reach out to @thekidsfromthecurrent account.
This is just the first of many! Stay tuned for more editorial events addressing hyper-local issues with voices from our very own community.

Cityscrapes is a column of opinion and analysis.
The New York Times turned its attention to San Antonio late last month in the form of a lengthy feature article.
No, it wasn’t about the coming wonders of Project Marvel and its multibillion-dollar price tag, or even about Spurs’ exciting playoff run. It didn’t focus on the wonders of the River Walk or our distinctive culture.
The piece, titled “San Antonio Is Booming. Why Are Many Still in Poverty?” noted that our city ranks as the third-poorest among the nation’s 25 largest metro areas, ranking alongside Houston and Detroit. Just as striking, our current poverty rate of about 17% is barely changed from that of 1980, when 20% of San Antonians lived below the federal poverty line.

Texas Democrats are drawing big guns this election cycle.
Former President Barack Obama appeared Tuesday alongside U.S. Senate candidate state Rep. James Talarico and gubernatorial hopeful state Rep. Gina Hinojosa as they campaigned at an Austin taco shop, videos circulating online show.
“Do you know our next governor and senator?” Obama asked patrons at the Taco Joint near the University of Texas, according to the Austin-American-Statesman.
The former president’s Texas visit comes as many Democrats read Talarico’s rising profile and President Donald Trump’s abysmal approval ratings as a chance to turn a statewide seat blue for the first time since 1994.

San Antonio just got a glimpse of the robotaxi future with Waymo on the streets and most people still don’t know what that means if something goes wrong 🚗
A crash with a self-driving car isn’t your typical accident. There’s no driver to trade insurance with, and responsibility can quickly get complicated between the tech, the company operating the fleet, and the vehicle systems behind it.
If you ever end up in that situation, here’s what matters in the moment
→ Call 911 and make sure a police report is filed
→ Take photos and video of everything including vehicle IDs and surroundings 📸
→ Don’t rush into signing anything or accepting a quick settlement
→ Act quickly since vehicle data and camera footage can be overwritten ⏱️
These cases move differently than regular car accidents, and timing really matters.
Angel Reyes & Associates has handled complex vehicle cases across Texas for over 30 years.
