Șantier. Continuous Studio 10 22.04-01.08 /SAC @ MALMAISON a solo show by Dumitru Gorzo curated by Alex Radu with a graphic/exhibition design by Ioana Naniș, Cristi Matei & Justin Baroncea * “Șantier” is the fourth exhibition with Dumitru Gorzo at /SAC and the sixth we have worked on together over the past ten years. Although I have always felt that it is more natural for me to curate group exhibitions than solo shows, I feel comfortable doing so for an artist whose practice I have been so closely involved with. This long-standing collaboration has also afforded me a privileged vantage point from which to observe how, for Gorzo, the concept of “șantier / construction site” can become a metaphor for a creative process in a state of perpetual experimentation, and of how Gorzo often transforms the exhibition space (with the rigor/structure and force/disruption of a real construction site) into a living studio, as in the Continuous Studio series. A new moment of intensity in Gorzo’s ongoing relationship with his work/creation, the exhibition “Șantier” at /SAC @ Malmaison takes shape as a captivating/primed, ephemeral, collaborative station/construction, centered around a laboratory phase. - Alex Radu * Dumitru Gorzo (b. 1975 in Ieud/Maramureș) is one of the most influential contemporary Romanian artists, having held the first major solo exhibitions by a Romanian artist both at MNAC (National Museum of Contemporary Art) in 2006 and at MARe (Museum of Recent Art) in 2025.

Friday, May 15th, at 7 PM, we would like to invite you to a concert within the context of the exhibition „Rhythmic stress / Tensiuni în ritm” at /SAC @ ACADEMIEI 18-20. Fw: In C Cc: Terry Riley From: NOISE404 Ensemble Revolutionary minimalist work In C, conceived in 1964 by American composer Terry Riley, gets reinterpreted by NOISE404 ensemble, channelling an exploration of the tension between organic and digital rhythms. 53 brief and simple musical patterns are to be repeated and performed in sequence by each of the players, but all have the freedom to decide when to start and how long to fixate on any one pattern, according to Terry Riley's instructions. Flute (Mihai Vaida / @vaida.mihai ), clarinet (Dragos Tătaru), violin (Larisa Nicolae / @_larisa.nicolae_ ), double bass (Oana Vardianu /@oanavarrrrrdianu ) and percussion (Vlad Polgar / @vladpolgar ) sonorities intersect and accumulate with voice, body sounds and iridescent synths (Ariadna Ene-lliescu / @ariadnaei and Andre Virgil Popescu / @andreivirgilpopescu ), while being obsessively held down by a hard beat (pre-construit de Mihnea Dragne / @d.mihnea_ ). In this process, instrumental, acoustic and human sonorities may lose their organic rhythms and appear mechanical or digitalised. The result: a deep trance-like state suggestive of a posthuman environment. “As part of the exhibition Tensiuni în ritm / Rhythmic Stress at /SAC @ UAUIM, the performance by NOISE404 Ensemble is conceived as a living extension of the exhibition space into a new sonic dimension, inspired by and addressing the embodied experience of the exhibition, the coexistence of the works here and now within the exhibition space, a transposition of these polyphonies into a live composition-installation-image-experience.” Alex Radu - curator

Pentru #Gorzo, expoziția e opus, iar titlul Șantier „are și o notă personală, lămuritoare, sper, pentru cei care îmi văd felul de lucru ca pe o hemoragie. Se crede în general că fac picturi continuu, atît de mult, încît, spun unii, nici nu contează dacă sînt bune. Și asta vine din felul în care apar lucrările din unele proiecte. Mai precis, se întîmplă ca pe durata mai multor luni să îmi încarc creierul cu te miri ce texte și informații, să pregătesc suprafețe, dezvolt direcții noi, schițez lucrări, caut pe unde nu am mai umblat și holbat pe unde am fost etc. Toate astea îmi pregătesc un proiect pe care îl am deja în cap. Cum ar veni se lucrează, dar vin doar inspirații răzlețe și se clarifică o direcție. Apoi, într-o perioadă de timp deseori scurtă, apar obiectele expoziției. Tendința generală este de a considera lucru doar timpul ăsta, travaliu de execuție. Un bun motiv să-i spun expoziției Șantier – după o perioadă de pregătire, vine momentul execuției, care e intens și edificator. Mai e un joc în interiorul limbajului, o rocadă, cei care au șantier (constructorii) de obicei spun că au «o lucrare»“. Fricțiunea caniculară a registrelor menține o tensiune de hală cu unelte grele, de forjă vulcaniană. “Șantier”, the exhibition signed by Dumitru Gorzo (@dumitrugorzostudio ), can be visited until august 1, Thursday to Saturday at /SAC @ Malmaison, between 16:00–20:00. @atelierele_malmaison “Șantier” brings together new works created especially for this exhibition, introducing technical developments that stem directly from the artist’s engagement with material as subject.
