“Sem Forma kicks off their first-ever event with Minimal Wave founder Veronica Vasicka, celebrating two decades of her genre-defining label. Vasicka will be playing a set drawn entirely from Minimal Wave’s catalogue — tracks that link early synth music, post-punk, and the foundations of techno, acid house, and EBM. Joining her: Greektown’s favourite son, Tony Price (Maximum Exposure / L.I.E.S.), FSR’s Maria Taifour, Bambi’s boss Mikey Apples, and Sem Forma’s Justin La Rose — each threading connections between coldwave, New Beat, EBM, and the Chicago-New York house traditions that shaped Toronto’s sound. While Depeche Mode and New Order were household names, Vasicka was unearthing their unknown bedroom contemporaries. These were DIY bedroom productions, cassettes traded through mail networks, machines talking to machines. The label’s name, Minimal Wave, captured a sound in the margins: too experimental for new wave, too melodic for industrial. Twenty years later, those margins echo through Toronto’s underground — in Kontravoid (Cititrax), Prince Innocence, TR/ST, and Tony Price’s own mutant electronics on L.I.E.S. This is Vasicka’s only announced Canadian 20th-anniversary stop.”
