I wanted to share a video I recently filmed and edited for Sony Korea. It’s a follow up to my journey as a filmmaker after the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards in 2023. I want to thank both @sonyfuturefilmmakerawards and @sonykorea for their support for filmmaking and giving me an opportunity to share my experience. And huge thanks to all my friends, colleagues, and fellow filmmakers. I realized that I barely shared any of my previous works on my Instagram page, so I decided to share my 2021-2022 Cinematography / Colorist reel before I edit and share my 2023 reel. I’m so pleased to share that “In Cod We Trust”, the documentary I made with @raphael_edwards for Boston University’s Documentary class, won the Student Non-fiction Category at the inaugural Sony Future Filmmaker Awards. @sonyfuturefilmmakerawards I had an unbelievable experience last week with other brilliant Shortlisted filmmakers at the historic Sony Pictures Studio in LA - from the Black Tie ceremony at the Cary Grant Theater to the two-day workshop with the industry professionals. I want to thank Sony Pictures and Creo Team for making this amazing event happen. I can’t wait to see where this festival goes in the years ahead. I’m once again thankful for the opportunity to share the stories of the hardworking fishers of Gloucester and their struggles with regulations and climate change. We send our thanks to professor Tatyana Bronstein and all our friends who shared notes and warm support for our project. While working within the journalism industry, I found myself questioning the definition of “truth.” In this project, I included some writing from my diary that I wrote while trying to sharpen that concept. What I realized is that I sometimes lose my way between showing what I actually saw and framing it for the story. I believe that a ballerina’s wounded feet, hidden in her beautiful pointe shoes, can be shown to the public, even if the wounds aren’t considered part of the art. I wouldn’t be able to finish this project without the amazingly talented team. “그림자춤 (Shadow Dance)” - @choi.chang.soon Had a great time directing and editing the new music video for @choi.chang.soon . It’s a whimsical and bittersweet tale of a goldfish’s unrequited love. We had so much fun experimenting to bring this theatrical, dreamy underwater world to life. “여름, 우리 (Slow Summer)” - @choi.chang.soon Over the summer, I directed a narrative music video for the artist @choi.chang.soon I came up with this weird summer love story about a guy trying to heat up his iced coffee in a microwave. We ended up placing the two protagonists on a huge turntable so they can spin inside this room-sized metaphorical microwave. I had so much fun experimenting with the microwave POVs, and underwater filming. It’s a story of love and summer that lives only in our memories. Hope it reminds you of good times you spent with loved ones. We recently worked on a mini docu-commercial for LG Group‘s YouTube channel. The video highlights LG U+ employees working overnight to improve mobile network stability during the New Year’s Eve countdown event in Bosingak. Taking Back August (2023) - DP, Colorist At the end of August, I wanted to make a throwback post of our undergrad thesis film “Taking Back August” @takingbackaugustfilm It’s been a year and a half since we made this film, but I never gave it a proper post until now. In Cod We Trust (2022) I’m gonna start posting my work on here so here are some stills from the first big project I worked on. Eric and I made this documentary in spring of 2022. In Cod We Trust is an 18 minute short documentary that follows the fight of Gloucester fishermen to keep their family run businesses afloat amidst growing governmental regulations and environmental concerns. Learned a lot on this project and we are so grateful for the fishermen community of Gloucester to have opened their doors to us to tell their story. We were also blessed to be recognized at a few film festivals. Met great people and saw amazing films. Thank you to everyone who helped on the project, especially our professors at BU and the Gloucester Fisheries Commission.
