Shelter - A 2D short animation

Shelter, is a short 2D animation inspired by the hidden forest of the game Sky: Children of the Light, and the movie Wolfwalkers (2020).

Esther, the last twilight cleric of the moon, struggles to protect a rare magical flower that has the potential to revive her entire tribe which has been wiped out from a curse brought upon the forest. As the acid rain slowly eats up the light of Esther’s flower, she must take flight and brace the storm. To seek shelter from the rain, before it is too late.

The animation process has been long and arduous, making this semester of the third year the heaviest so far. Looking back at all the rough passes and preliminary concepts, seeing how it has evolved to this has been rewarding and I figured that I should put up a breakdown of the process (look forward to some bts of the agony that went behind all this :p). It’s also the first time I attempt to do a film music score for my own work and I think it was really meaningful for me to compose music for a project that feels so personal to me. Music composition is something I may find myself getting into in future animation projects. But for now, the storm is over, and Im finally going to get some rest. wew

Here are some animation loops done as part of my first work study job over the holidays. This is for the animated documentary, Hölderlins Echo, directed and written by Hannes Rall and Susanne Marschall, which is estimated to be released at 2022.

Mallory is a half-elf sorceress who accidentally nuked a fireball on her village when she was 6. She was sent to a divination wizard, isolated in a forest, to train her to control her wild magic. Even after 12 years of training, she still has not controlled her wild magic fully and still accidentally turns into potted plants and nukes fireballs on herself. But it is no accident when Fortune’s Favoured calls to her for a special mission.

This character was probably the most enjoyable to play in DND, which makes you sign an unwritten contract of being the party’s comedy relief. 🐒 some of which include turning into a sheep, summoning flumphs, casting confusion on yourself and transforming into a potted plant.

Way long overdue! Only decided to compile it recently as I was offered a freelance 2D animation job and asked to show the company my non existent portfolio. So I quickly put together something to at least show them 😅
