Are you afraid of the dark? What if all the darkness you see in the world is an opportunity to own your light? Performative “love and light” spirituality is actually dead. The body is rotting. We already could smell it. In 17 years of working with “extreme” cases (people that the psychologist, psychiatrist and shaman could not help) there is one thing that makes the difference: they are not afraid of fear. They have a Divine right to be a victim and they choose to be a creator not despite the darkness, but BECAUSE of it. These are the ones that actually bring creative justice to evil because they aren’t reactive or spiritually bypassed. Doing the “work” isn’t about a particular method or technique (they can all be helpful and harmful in context), it’s about sitting with your inner animal and giving them what they need rather than projecting your fears and desires on a world that is mostly unconscious. This is GOLD. Not Bling. Real gold.

I remember the first time I saw a tribal battle. I was about 6 or 7 years old and I saw two tribes attack each other with spears and machetes. It was intense and impactful but didn’t leave me “traumatized” because where I was born and raised, war is something normal and expected. Peace was something you found between conflict. Also, the woman who raised me was from the Simbu tribe (who are well known for being hardcore warriors) and she taught me a lot. After seeing a lot of crazy and unnecessary violence one day I realized 3 things that seem contradictory but actually aren’t: 1) Your boundaries are real. Whether personal or collective, you have a right to enforce them if necessary. Nobody should be able to hurt you against your will. 2) Boundaries are also an illusion. We are connected far more deeply by our shared humanity than divided by our differences. 3) A truly peaceful warrior never gives up the fight, he/she just fights for inner peace first. Whether we know it or not, we are tribal beings. The key is to recognize that our tribe is bigger than our beliefs. There are forces in this word that want to divide us, turn us away from our humanity and create an existence where forget that we can choose peace over war as well as fight for what’s right from THAT place. “Live with a peaceful heart; cultivate a warrior’s spirit.” — Dan Millman In tribal wisdom, the warrior wasn’t the loudest— he was the most rooted. Rooted in his people. Rooted in the land that held him. Rooted in the circle that reminded him who he was. Peace in the heart. Fire in the spirit. Community at your back. That’s how a warrior walks the world.

This is something that I have not shared publicly before. In 1980, my family moved from the United States to Papua New Guinea. They were immediately adopted by a tribe from the Ohuru region of Madang (a coastal region). This is something that had never happened at any point in history. Especially to a white family from the United States. The man on the right in this picture is Dui. He was the chief of the clan and was like a brother to my dad (on the right). When I was born, not only did he insist that I be named after his father, but that I be made a chief and tasked with guardianship of their tribal lands when I became an adult. Most people can’t begin to understand the profound responsibility and connection I have to my tribe and land. Everything I do starts there In the modern world, even if you’re part of a nation or a family, it’s so easy to feel like a person disconnected from purpose and the profound meaning that comes from knowing what you’re here to do. When people forget that they really are tribal beings, they are easily manipulated, they get sick and they lose their power. They get addicted to mindless pleasure because they are fighting their deepest instincts, they just don’t know it. The medicine is connection. The medicine is care. The medicine is protecting what is yours. Everything I teach in the Neuron Code and the leadership training comes from direct experience. It’s in my bones. It’s not just hypnosis and healing. It’s not just leadership and coaching. It’s a return to your instincts. Everything I do is for them and you. You need to remember your tribal instincts to survive this crazy modern life.

So many of the brilliantly marketed techniques and methods of hypnotherapy, coaching, neo-shamanic healing, energy work, belief shifting etc aren’t there to sell you the change you want, they are there to sell the experience. I would never say that the products are spiritual or psychological highs masquerading as inner work. Nope. I would NEVER say that.😉 People who get something from these often get the change not because of some super special sexy new (or “ancient”) magical method….but despite it. Which is awesome. Seriously. Aaaaand… Be open to the possibility that there is something else going on. The human-animal does something that they cannot seem to change on thier own. “Unconsciously” Goes to someone that does something. They experience a shift in their psycho-physiology. Their attention is guided in particular ways. That part of them that does the thing stops, does it differently or in another more pleasing way. They attribute this change to the technique coach, therapist or shaman (which are all highly important factors by the way). But the REAL magic. The actual thing that makes the thing work. Is in the human-animal. It is in thier own capacity for change. OUR capacity for change. There are principles at work that go all the way back to BEFORE the dawn of humanity. And through our very neurobiology. Once you get these… You can literally do anything you want (as long as you follow the principles and patterns). And get the change. You can wear your cool hat. Funky clothes. Be as “evidence based” as you want. Or wild and magical as you need to be. And still be congruent. Knowing that you KNOW how you do what you do and why it works. Makes all the difference.

A Powerful Shift in How I Help Clients Create Lasting Change I began my coaching practice in my early 20’s and dove deep into hypnosis and NLP. Apart from studying with some of the best (and honest) folks in the field, I constantly explored and tested different approaches. Everything from CBT and Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy to The 3 Principles and various “out there” spiritual methods. Although I got great results with clients, I struggled to integrate my personal history of growing up with indigenous tribes in Papua New Guinea, the latest neuroscience and my own experience as a long term meditation practitioner. Last year I connected with @michaelperezhypnosis and as we began diving into his Neuron Code work, several things happened: The challenges I was having helping clients impact their own life in a truly systemic and transformative way dissolved. Those who embarked on a deeply embodied journey (exploring how their neurology, biology, and ancestral wisdom held the key to their transformation) found the personal change they were seeking. My own life experience also rapidly transformed. Certain personal issues I had been dealing with and trying to work through for over 2 decades resolved. It was clear that not only was there a “there” there, but that it was elegant, effective and integrated all the many modalities and life perspectives I had into something I could really get behind. We are now doing some VERY cool things together to be announced shortly. Stay tuned!

You are more animal than rational. In fact, humans really aren’t rational. Most of the time we rationalise our animal behaviours in fancy ways and call them “choices”. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. That’s pretty much a fiction. One guiding principle in the way I work is to actually deal with them and not demonise, psycho-babble or spiritual bypass it all away. This is what it means to live well. We all have inner conflicts around our animal drives. Sex. Food. Power/Status. These are all normal, healthy and important to honour. We get ourselves in trouble when we believe we need to “tame” our animal selves. In fact, I will go so far as to say we are at our most spiritual when we have our animal selves working well WITH our rational selves in the most ecological way where we get what we need without sacrificing our well-being, the environment or our species. This is an ongoing negotiation. Not an “animal bad, rational good” situation. But fully HUMAN. Present with our needs in a way that actually works for us, not against us. Because what is stranger than an animal that turns against itself? What is more dangerous than an animal that pretends it isn’t?

What has 20 years of formal meditation practice taught me? This is just a few points of my own experience and not exhaustive or comprehensive in any way. 1. I am just getting started. Despite real and immediate benefits like greater mental health, clarity and emotional regulation, I know I am just touching the surface of what is possible. 2. Consistency and practice matter. It really is like the gym. You can’t expect results without doing the work and a little bit goes a long way. 3. Deep experiences, states of consciousness and things happen. They are all normal, natural and also passing. Getting stuck on a peak experience is going backwards. 4. The map is not the territory. What you think it is, is not the thing itself because you can’t think direct experience. You can only experience it. 5. Profound connection isn’t something you earn, it’s who you are. 6. Everything gets better and that’s not the reason you do it. You do it because if you don’t, you’ll miss your life caught up in thinking. 7. There comes a point where you couldn’t imagine life without your practice. 8. You may actually become unbothered about the “big questions” in life. What may have motivated you the in past to practice becomes kind of irrelevant. You can live with uncertainty in a much more powerful way. The word “maybe” is your best friend. 9. What you do in the rest of your life matters. It’s very hard to go deep in meditation when you are being a dick to others (or yourself). 10. It’s also very hard to see when you are being a dick to others (or yourself) if you don’t practice awareness. Oh the irony. For those that have years of practice (or even just starting out), I’m curious what have you noticed?

I can’t even begin to describe how influential Jane Goodall was on my life. One of my mother’s greatest heroes and supporters in anthropology, her name was always present in our home. In my work with Neuron Code Tribal Training, her research and ethos is integral. Most of our inner and (and outer) conflicts come from the reality that we have forgotten we are animals. In fact, the part of your brain that runs the majority of your life decisions is closest related to the chimpanzee. You can try to intellectualise it away or spiritualise it away but the case remains: you are an animal and that’s ok. If fighting our animal instincts worked, it would have done it by now (it has had 2,000,000 years). Our human brain has to work WITH our animal selves, not try to tame it. Then we can both get what we need, including peace on earth. “We’re not, after all, separate from the animal kingdom. We’re part of it.”-Jane Goodall.
