Incredibly, yet again a few days out from fight day, Irish super-lightweight Ryan O’Rourke’s (13-0) fight against Alex Vargas on Friday has been cancelled, this time due to visa issues. This is beyond ridiculous! In 2025 he had four fights cancelled hours before fight night and now he’s had another two in 2026, only this time it was on a bigger stage on the undercard of Alycia Baumgardner vs Bo Mi Re Shin.
Talk about bad luck. It’s enough to want you to pack it all in. That’s 6 training camps, weight cuts and money spent on camps all wasted, whilst not making a single dine. There has been fighters who have had similar issues to Ryan, like Anthony Cacace and Caoimhín Agyarko. But the difference is, they are big Irish names. They’ve always had a path laid out in front of them, no matter how bad it got and they took advantage of it.
Ryan can’t turn himself into any type of name because he can’t bloody fight!! He’s had horrendous politics that has prevented him fighting in his home town of Dublin and fight after fight falling through. The bloke has fought 4 times in 4 years. That’s crazy for a 26 year old prospect.
It will turnaround for him. He’s too good to just fade away. Go and ask @ant_crolla86 , Joe Gallagher, Pat Barrett, Steve Maylett, @zelfaflash and @jack.rafferty95 . They’ve all seen Ryan close up and they will tell you he’s a talented fighter. However, there has been no structure in his career.
You can’t have a fighter cutting weight this many times with nothing to show for it. It’s dangerous!! A young, talented fighter can’t do what he loves. It just isn’t acceptable. It needs to change and quickly! He does have a new management team in the respected Sheer Sports. Hopefully they can secure the opportunity’s he craves.

Just under two weeks (April 17th) until Irishman, Ryan O’Rourke, takes on Alex Vargas on the undercard of Alycia Baumgardner vs Bo Mi Re Shin at the theatre in MSG.
This fight will probably be on the prelims, as both fighters aren’t signed with MVP. But I’m telling you now, this will be fight of the night!! Both undefeated. It will be a dog fight!! Ryan loves a tear up, as does the other bloke.
Ryan is the better fighter. But I have to be honest, i’m very concerned he will get robbed. I’ve watched boxing for long enough to understand that he’s the away fighter in this. Vargas is the ticket seller and it’s in his backyard.
They will give him nothing out there. Ryan is going to have to do a demolition job on this bloke. Which he can do. Don’t worry about that. But it’s going to be a very tough fight. Tune in!!!
