"Within each one of us there once was a fire, and for some of us, it seems as though there's only ashes now. But when we dig in the ashes we find one ember and very gently we fan that ember, blow on it, it gets brighter, and from that ember, we rebuild the fire." Ram Dass.
Lately, I have kept my life private because I've spent the last two years struggling to keep living. Each night I lay in bed, hoping I wouldn't wake up. Like many people, during the pandemic, I lost my community, studios, and livelihood. I also developed severe osteoarthritis and lived with daily pain. This led to extreme depression.
Throughout my life, I have experienced mental health challenges and I have gone through countless types of treatments; I have also developed many methods for managing my mental health, with yoga being the pillar. But over the past couple of years, nothing worked.
I stopped practicing all forms of yoga. For over a year, I lay in bed most days, unable to focus on anything but the brokenness and pain I felt. I felt completely hopeless. My family and friends kept me alive during that time, as I had all but ceased functioning. Although the darkness seemed impenetrable, they never gave up on me.
Everything changed when I met the love of my life, who held me in the darkness and guided me toward light. Dani convinced me there was a way through and I decided to fight.
Thanks to the grace of my friends and community, I overcame my fear and committed to a nine-week treatment program at Ravensview. It was life-changing. I realized I wasn't alone in my struggle, and I had the power to get well; I found hope again.
I diligently followed the programming, and strictly adhered to my own wellness plan. I became disciplined again, I put all of my energy into these daily practices. It was a very challenging process but I am thankful to say that the effort has been worth it; I am well again! I recognize this process is ongoing, it will continue to require discipline over a lifetime and I look forward to doing the work.
My message of hope:
I know it is possible to get through the darkest times; Suffering can be overcome. There is always an ember to reignite.

Feeling full after teaching and learning with the wonderful yogins at @bainbridgeyogahouse . @jenbreenbainbridge has created a yoga haven in Washington. That time in China 🇨🇳… My elder Joseph Naytowhow wrote one of my favourite songs, We Are All One People. He says, We are all one nation, we are all one colour in (his/her) eyes. (If we try)
This is from another trip that confirmed to me that people are people wherever I go… (@lululemon sent me to share the teaching in Shanghai and Beijing).

The day I fell in love with Patti and the elephants…
Long story short…Went for a hike through the forest (Bali) on her back. I took of my sandals and was scratching her back. Later in the walk she stopped for apparently no reason. Next thing I knew her trunk was in front of my face holding my sandal. I hadn’t even noticed if fell off but she did and she picked it up for me. I got a hug at the end. I think she liked the back scratch because I was the only one she would let feed her. 🤗 That was the day I completely fell in love with elephants (especially Patti). 🥹 🩶 🐘 ❤️ 🙏🏽
(Was not thrilled to be going to a captive elephant park. I learned that the elephants were rescued from work camps in Sumatra and gave it a chance. Was blown-away by the sweetness and the sensitivity of these magnificent creatures. @elephantsbali 🇮🇩)

Working to find balance each and every day… Be still and know…
“Balance in the body is the foundation for balance in life. In whatever position one is in, or in whatever condition in life one is placed, one must find balance. Balance is the state of the present - the here and now. If you balance in the present, you are living in Eternity” - B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on Life
