National Dog Day is a bittersweet day this year. Our new pup Penny Layne Holliday joined our family in Late June, but it was the result of us losing both our of dogs Buster and Doc this year. Buster was our “first born” as we were just two kids in college who adopted a dog together. Those who are close to us know the great stories of Buster. He was the first dog I ever had and I can’t imagine a more loyal and loving companion. As he got older, losing him was one of my biggest fears and I couldn’t mentally prepare myself for the end. In late April he decided it was time, suddenly passing after 16 1/2 years. It was like he knew we couldn’t handle the thought of putting him down, so he went out on his own terms. He lived an epic life and it’s still hard waking up everyday and not taking him for his morning walk.
So now it’s all about Penny. She’s not Buster or Doc, despite all the things that drove us crazy. She has brought some chaos back to our house that had temporarily become so quiet and sad. Here’s to new beginnings, Penny.
This year our crew spent an extra day at the ranch to get ready for our next race. Every year I feel like I spend less time enjoying the ranch, so I took the opportunity to go for a run and got some photos of some favorite spots. Like so many that have practically grown up at the ranch, it’s a special place for me. It’s so sad to see what’s happened and I hope our community can do whatever it takes to help the Lynn and Bruto families. @lorettalynnmx
