pavonine cuckoo - montezuma road, colombia. pavonine means peacock-like, and you will not find a less peacock-like bird; merlin describes this brown, awkward, strangely proportioned creature as "fiendishly hard to see." it's also poorly understood in colombia, where its presence was only really established in the last two decades. we got insanely lucky with some of the best looks at this species in history thanks to the expertise of @ocreatus_underwoodii .

though a ubiquitous species in east asian art and folklore, this large crane became rare in the 20th century following severe population declines from habitat loss. thankfully, conservation efforts have led to significant recovery and the species was recently downgraded from "threatened" to "near-threatened" by japan's environmental ministry. today, it's most reliably seen in winter around a few towns in eastern hokkaido, gathering in large flocks in rice fields where pairs dance and scrap for onlookers.
