FIVE YEARS AGO I STARTED MAKING THINGS I WANTED TO SEE IN THE WORLD. NOT TO LAUNCH A BRAND, BUT TO START A CONVERSATION. PRINTED TEES AS PROTOTYPES. STORES AS GATHERING POINTS. MUSIC AS CONTEXT. CULTISH AS AN IDEA IN MOTION.
PEOPLE PICKED IT UP BEFORE IT WAS FULLY DEFINED. THEY WORE IT, REMIXED IT, GAVE IT MEANING BEYOND WHAT I COULD HAVE PLANNED. THAT’S HOW IT GREW. THROUGH PARTICIPATION, NOT CAMPAIGNS.
THIS PROJECT IS A LOVE LETTER TO THE BELIEVERS. AN ARTISTIC AU REVOIR TO THE REST.

As the lore goes, the vision for @cultishofficial first design came to @ryanbrussow in the Rijksmuseum in 2020; arguably the least ideal moment in modern history to launch a brand — what with the pandemic and all — still, when endowed with foresight, one has little choice but to answer the call; and answer the call, he has, tenfold.
Proudly produced from a Cape Town-based atelier, CULTISH exists as a collage of counterculture, internet ephemera, underground movements, obscure references, community, and belonging; a worldview stitched together through clothing, gatherings, and a deep commitment to connection. CULTISH is for the people, and it understands something many brands have forgotten; culture has always been built in the margins first, through earnest participation, and people finding one another in the noise.
We chat to Ryan about his inspirations, vision, his infamous Cult Dogs, and more.
