🎨 Master Crosshatching Basics ✍️ If you’re looking to add depth, lighting, and definition to your sketches, cross-hatching is a solid technique. Let’s break it down step by step:
🔹 Step 1: Establish Light Source Knowing where your light source is coming from is key. Always figure out which areas will be in light and which will be in shadow. 💡
🔹 Step 2: Follow the form don’t just add random lines. Make sure your cross-hatching follows the object’s shape. The right technique can enhance the form, while random lines might make things look messy. 🧑🎨
🔹 Step 3: Vary line length To avoid harsh transitions, vary the lengths of your lines. Keep them tight for darker areas and more open for lighter ones. Too much layering can lose clarity. ✏️
🔹 Step 4: Avoid over-rendering too many lines can create a muddy effect. Carefully place your hatches to keep a good balance between shadows and highlights. Less can be more. ⚠️
🔹 Step 5: Practice, Practice, Practice. Once you’ve figured out your light and shadows, render with confidence. Crosshatching takes practice, but with time, you’ll get better at defining texture and form. 🖌️

Inking is way more about choosing each line intentionally rather than tracing. The more you can work on you dexterity with your hands to get interesting lines, the more interesting your inks will be.
