Flashback to last August when @saillanka invited us to sail in Trinco for the east coast season. It was pure magic! 🌊🌈💙🐬
Another season of dive surveys completed for the Urban Reef Biodiversity Mapping Project in Colombo, led by @blueresources and supported by the @lankaenvironmentfund 🌊🐠
This season, the team revisited sites identified during last year’s drop camera surveys, ground-truthing reef features and collecting additional field observations🤿🔎
At deeper locations, where quantitative sampling wasn’t possible, surveys focused on qualitative observations and photographic records of coral species and key reef features 🪸📸 In parallel, qualitative and quantitative surveys were carried out across Yakampita and Pitagala reefs, documenting corals, fish, and marine invertebrates using photo quadrats and video transects 📊🐟
Each round of fieldwork adds to a growing dataset, helping build a clearer picture of Colombo’s urban reef systems, how they vary across depth, and why they matter for marine biodiversity 🐚

Fusiliers 🐟 stay in tight groups as a defense strategy. Moving together makes it harder for predators to single out one individual, and those fluid, wave-like shifts you see are part of that collective behavior.
