“Nerves,” magazine paper and gel medium, 14x11 in, 2018. I was drowning, weighed down yet suspended by the water. Depression is a dozen plates of weight on your chest. I couldn’t take a full breath, just like when I was pregnant in my last trimester. But instead of growing a child, morass was growing inside me. How can I be numb yet be a bundle of raw exposed nerves, dangling helpless in the waves, flailing to the whims of the current? That was 48 year old me. An empty husk sinking into the depth of ink. During recovery, my husband suggested I be an artist. He gave me myself back. My self portrait greets you by the door when you enter @leftofcentergallery . You can choose to move your legs and kick. Just a little flutter, then another, and another, before you find yourself floating up towards the pale sunlight streaming through the dark recesses of your mind. There are faces to greet you when you emerge, grinning like a fool at the sun #collage #depression #mentalhealth #artheals #artismedicine

I was thinking about the saying “praying to the porcelain god,” as a tongue in cheek way to refer to spontaneous bodily contrition after life affirming debauchery. Made me conscious of the posture of expelling in general and the overlap with being prostrate to entities we worship, figuratively and physically. Both involve a release and a sort of surrender. Made me wonder about what the point of our existence is, carry out the cycle of consumption and purging? Or is it to worship something greater? I don’t have the answer, I just think the overlap in the physicality to be provocative. My collage, “Supplicate or Defecate” is a result of that rumination. This work and other similar (less visceral) can be found at @leftofcentergallery until 6/6/26. Gallery hours Wed-Sat 12-4pm. If the door is locked, please call the gallery at 702-647-7378 #collageart #collageartistoninstagram #contemporaryart #mixedmedia

“Acceptance I,” image transfer, joss paper, and gold leaf (2024). I was grieving, grappling with the permanency of death. I learned about the 5 stages of grief, denial, anger, bargaining, depression & acceptance. I found solace & sanctity in the material becoming immaterial, of energy transference back into earth. Image transfer to give a sense of decay, joss paper used by Chinese people burned to worship the dead, and gold leaf to give a sense of the sacred, all blended into one, juxtaposing the spiritual with the physical. You can find this work and others at Ephemeral Recomposition at @leftofcentergallery until 06/06/2026 #mixedmedia #figurativeart #diaspora #contemporaryart

Join us this Saturday for the opening reception of, “Ephemeral Recomposition,” by Jeannie Hua. 🌟 April 11th, 2026 🕐 Noon — 3pm Gallery Hours: Tuesday- Friday, noon - 4:00 p.m. Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. All exhibits are free to the public, but donations are appreciated. As seen through the eyes of an immigrant, starting from the age of eight, Jeannie Hua had worked to assimilate and strive for the American dream. Art had been her constant companion, an outlet to work through public and personal tragedies. Picking up the pieces after experiencing a breakdown, and piecing back together a life during recovery, Jeannie’s use of scraps of ephemera to make her images serve as an analogy, a parallel to the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle we are all a part of, each piece integral to the big picture. Jeannie Hua graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has shown her work extensively in New York and throughout the United States as well as internationally. I was always fiber curious. Signed up for TC2 Intensive Beginner’s Workshop at @lmrm_chicago . Hope and her staff were nothing but supportive and professional. I learned so much and intend to incorporate weaving in my art practice. #fiberartist #fiberart #fiber #weaving #tc2loom

Loved adding performance to my art practice. Narration is ever present in my work, abstract and representational. A story doesn’t have to be linear, doesn’t have to be verbal. Narration can be sensory, fragments and layers of perception. But the medium of storytelling is linear because it serves as an invitation, an offer, a beckon to connect where the light shines. Thank you @sjadacheng for your guidance thank you @aaartschicago for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the greater whole. And thank you @restoriedbookshop for the venue. Thank you @eiahats and @kazgoesback for joining me and indulging in Turkish sweets after the performance and thank you @miaparkmiapark for inviting me to the Ajumma ceramic pot-tay afterwards. Got to be with the cool kids all day #storytelling #performanceart #asianamericanstories #asianamericandiaspora #womenstories #asianamericanhistory

I looked at the cracked high ceiling and really didn’t know who I was for about fifteen strange seconds. I wasn’t scared; I was just somebody else, some stranger, and my whole life was a haunted life, the life of a ghost. One of the many things I learned at the papermaking workshop at Penland with Cynthia and Akemi was how lovable abaca was. Who knew? I’m so in love with abaca. Yes, I know I’m also in love with kozo. So I’m in a polyamorous relationship with pulps. When I sandwiched wires between 2 sheets of abaca, the papers move and shape the wires as they dry. I love the knowledge that my art pieces finish themselves when I leave them to incubate. That my art has a life of its own. Wiry veins flowing through my abaca, like course-ways through the material, lending life and flow from 2D to 3D. Trusting in the process #papermaking #collage #paperart #collageart #abaca #handmadepaper #handmadepapercollage #penlandschoolofcrafts
