Owners John and Kristin have curated a fun and homey space, with an eclectic, penny-top counter and newly built parklet just out front. Fun fact: BINKO‘s was actually born at 45th and Judah in the Outer Sunset, overlooking the inspiring expanse of the Pacific Ocean. So it is both endearing and full circle that we are now featured at Rusty Ladle, just around the corner from our old haunt.

Charlie’s last shift for a long time - possibly forever- nobody knows.
@char.loess (my nephew) has been here from the beginning taking on many unwanted tasks, learning to cook, remembering everyone’s name, being kind, leading his coworkers, telling decent jokes, being social director, always trying to improve the system and general good vibes.
We are going to miss the “Quiet Storm” greatly. We wouldn’t be where we are today with out his dedication and putting up with Chef John.
Swing by Friday night. We will be giving him a proper send off. There might be a few surprises.

We have decided to take on the Riviera Soup Challenge.
We have taken liberties to resurrect this soup, such as using ditalini pasta, not adding Hydrolysed Corn Protein or MSG. We think we have payed homage to this nostalgic soup but at the same time given it the down home SF treatment.
When I first arrived in this wonderful town, I was introduced to arguably the best canned soup ever. Rivera Minestrone - Orginal Recipe Minestrone Authentic San Francisco Soup. A beany minestrone with pasta and chard. The history dates back to 1934 but documentation is murky. I do know that @birdseyevegetables acquired the brand before selling to Nalley, a @conagrafoodservice brand, where it was layed to rest in corporate america wasteland.
In 1999 @sfgate had a canned minestrone taste test. Riviera came in 4th. “All of the panelists (including the likes of Roland Passot of La Folie) commented that this very thick soup had little in common with traditional minestrone. Some said it more closely resembled split pea soup.”
I loved this soup and was sad to see it go but I am also so honored that we can bring back a few memories and create some new ones.
