Our Syrah 2022 has been named among the Top 10 Shirazes in South Africa, receiving 92 points in the Prescient WineMag Shiraz Report. A wine that often sits quietly in the shadow of our Cabernet Sauvignon - and one we hold in very high regard. Behind it is a terroir story worth knowing. Our Tukulu soils. Decomposed granite, Table Mountain sandstone, and ironstone keep the vine naturally in check: well-drained, moderately fertile, slightly stressed. The kind of conditions Syrah thrives in. Shop the 2022 vintage via the link in our bio.

Looking back at harvest, one of the most important times of the year at Rust en Vrede. This video captures quiet moments from the vineyards and cellar; the grapes arriving, the cellar coming to life, and a new vintage slowly beginning to take shape. We can't wait to see what this vintage becomes.

Yesterday we concluded Harvest 2026 with our final press. A season of early mornings, late nights, and unwavering attention to detail - now resting in barrel, with everything still to come.

As harvest concludes, it's time to reflect on the 2026 vintage at Rust en Vrede. A long, dry, and windy season kept vineyards clean and decisions sharp. A burst of 40°C heat in March compressed harvest into just over two weeks - intense, but consistent. The result? Clean, evenly ripe fruit with great colour, structure, and balance. Yields are on track, and young blocks are showing real promise. None of this would be possible without our winemaking team led by Danielle le Roux and Dirk Mouton, alongside Chris Kruger, Christof Smith and AD le Hanie, their expertise and passion are at the heart of every bottle. We would also like to acknowledge our dedicated harvest interns - Steff Coetzee, Egan Botes, Adriana Carstens, Nicolaas Moller and Giulio Benvenuti - whose commitment and energy are invaluable.

As the last grapes are received and the harvest season gently draws to a close, Jean and the winemaking team, led by Danielle le Roux and Dirk Mouton, pause to raise a glass to a vintage defined by dedication, craft, and quiet triumph. Here’s to the beauty of the season past, and the wines that will carry its story forward.

At Rust en Vrede we specialize in Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, both late-ripening varieties. We are waiting patiently for our grapes to ripen fully before we begin harvest

January at Rust en Vrede is a time for observation, preparation, and quiet focus in the vineyards. Since stepping into the role in 2021, winemaker Danielle has continued the estate’s legacy with a philosophy rooted in stewardship, balance, and longevity. Guided by those who came before her, she believes Rust en Vrede’s wines aren’t reinvented - only carefully fine-tuned. While the next vintage is already taking shape behind the scenes, guests can still enjoy the results of years past in every glass in our Tasting Room
