Rustan started making videos by appropriating found footage, as a way to document his interests and readings.
Today, his video works can take up to a year to produce and are the result of a complex technical process that uses video game software to combine camera footage with 3D scanning. Rustan developed a passion for storytelling and world-building, for which he constantly draws inspiration from philosophy and science fiction. The characters inhabiting the narratives he creates are often faced with puzzling situations or ambiguous contexts that rapidly alternate between different temporalities and locations.
In this conversation for Living Content, we talk about the underlying interests that drive his work: the evolution of human culture, and his engagement with strategies of world-building.

Hi there, this is @bob.bk1 / @is_this_it_is_this_it , taking over the @chelseaual account throughout the day ! I'm currently completing my BA in Fine Art and these are some install shots of my degree show piece which I'll be talking to you about throughout the day! Instead of showing my own work I decided to curate an exhibition within the show. Outside of uni I run a platform for contemporary art called isthisit?, organising online exhibitions, monthly online residencies, an online shop, offline exhibitions and a book series released on a triannual basis, so I used the degree show as an opportunity to bring my art practice and my curatorial platform together. The current exhibition at Chelsea is called Duty Free and focuses on ideas surrounding the corporatisation of public space, an influx of utopian ideals and the automation of industry as everyday activities accompanied by the capitalisation and utilisation of the Internet as a space for corporate ownership within an increasingly gamified culture. Happy to be showing a piece from @rustansoderling on the 15th June as part of 'Duty Free' @chelseaual and curated by @bob.bk1 ! This is a screen grab from a recent video by Söderling titled 'Tannhäuser Gate (Not Really Now Not Anymore)'. The piece takes the viewer to a ransacked FamilyMart in the aftermath of a fictitious catastrophe. Within the work you see a present haunted by the past, a sense of time as being somehow synchronous and invisible, with past and future moving away from each other while still haunted by the threads which weave them together. - In the summer of 2019, I will compete, with a Cheva Nova, in Sweden’s largest car race. Six tracks all around Sweden for seven days. The lines, sound and power make up the ready made. Participating is only ambition. Just like art, it produces metaphors and sensations. You drive off with all of the power of the car; with all its noise and rage, racing off to wherever it takes you, just to return to where you started from.
