The Russian River needs help. Water supply shortages, water quality impairment, declining ecological resiliency, threatened fish and wildlife populations, flooding, aging infrastructure — these are just a number of the cross-cutting and complex challenges faced in the beloved watershed while human-caused climate change hastens and exacerbates these challenges. Complex issues require unified and effective solutions. That’s why, in 2017, the Russian River Confluence was launched as a means to bring together communities and stakeholders to combine resources and catalyze effective action to protect the life source for so many. The Russian River Confluence is a collaboration of partners dedicated to creating a generational shift in restoring, renewing, and celebrating the future of the Russian River watershed. Every year, steelhead and salmon make a brave journey from the ocean back to their home streams in the Russian River to lay their eggs. It’s a reminder that this place isn’t just for humans, it’s part of something much bigger. “I am the river, the river is me” (Ko te awa, ko au, ko au, ko te awa) is an indigenous philosophical concept from New Zealand’s Whanganui Māori, representing the inseparability of people and nature. It views the river as a living ancestor. 🤝 As we head into warmer days along the Russian River, let’s take care of it: 🥾Stick to marked paths! Those riverbanks are fragile habitat. 🎒Pack it in, pack it out. Leave no trace behind. 🎣Only fish for (and potentially eat) what’s legal. A little care goes a long way.

Another wonderful Steelhead Festival for the books! 🐟 Congrats to everyone who successfully “smelled their way home” like a steelhead. River Steward Brianna Delgado recently completed a pollinator planting at Rancho Mark West, right along Mark West Creek 🌼🌿 By planting native species in this riparian area, Brianna is helping strengthen habitat and support the long-term health of the Russian River Watershed. She says: “Pollinators are essential to the health of the Russian River watershed. They support the reproduction of native plants that stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and keep sediment out of Mark West Creek and the Russian River. They also play a vital role in local food systems, biodiversity, and overall ecosystem resilience. Planting native species supports creek health because their deep, well-adapted root systems hold soil in place, filter stormwater, and reduce runoff into our waterways. They require less water, fertilizer, and pesticides than non-native species, which helps protect creeks from pollution while strengthening the surrounding habitat.” Every native plant added along the creek helps create a healthier watershed for pollinators, wildlife, and our community. 🌎 #RespectRussianRiver #WatershedStewards #PollinatorHabitat #MarkWestCreek #SonomaCounty
