Rush University’s Men in Nursing brought home hardware for the third consecutive year and fourth time overall at the American Association for Men in Nursing conference. Faculty advisors and members of the group reflect on all they have accomplished and how mentorship is paving the way for future generations of nurses.
“I have all these people that are helping me, providing me with leadership, supervision and guidance in what I want to do. I’m trying to help people who are newer in the organization in my own way,” said Mateo Rey, student vice president of Men in Nursing.

The Rush community went above and beyond to support Frances Pastuszka, DNP, CRNA ’22, through her journey to become a nurse anesthetist. She and her fiancé, Kenny Lam, recently made a philanthropic gift to Rush to support @rushunursing ’s Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist students and faculty, as well as educational enhancements in the CRNA program.
“I definitely had a lot of challenges that I had to overcome, but the program helped me become a much stronger person, anesthesia provider and nurse — everything,” Frances said. “The program helped us a lot, so we wanted to give back.”

From the Rush Archives: In 1983, Ron Graf, RN, was one of five male nurses working in obstetrics and gynecology at Rush. Reflecting on a court ruling that allowed hospitals to exclude male nurses from labor and delivery rooms, Graf said most patients had no issue with a male nurse. “Occasionally patients are surprised when I tell them I’m a nurse,” he said. “They automatically assume I’m a doctor. But I’ve found that if you are capable and professional, most patients have no problem.’’
