In the exhibition Front View, Nika Rupnik presents paintings on canvas, drawings made on plexiglass and prints in which she stems from her reflection on the (in)stability of home, the elusive identity of space and the existential uncertainties of contemporary times. Her visual language is distinctive, constructed from sketch-like drawing strokes, graphic elements and layered application of colour, all of which build up images of dispersed, often uninhabited environments portrayed in her works.
The artist is inspired by architectural remnants of urban spaces – abandoned, uninhabited buildings that struggle to defy the ravages of time and the natural processes of decay – construction pits, and sites where vegetation gradually grows into the urban body, blurring the boundary between the artificial and the organic. In this liminal space, where decaying buildings coexist with the persistence of nature, symbolic landscapes unfold.
In her works, architecture is not presented by its useful function, but as a fragmented structure that is losing its original form and purpose. In this context, it is bound to temporality, material instability and formal incompleteness.
We are presented with the experience of a space without a solid support – a space that establishes itself as a transitory, changeable and temporary structure. In this sense, the artist thinks of space as a relational concept that does not only possess physical prerequisites, but is an entity preconditioned by social, historical and material change.
