OFFLINE ISLANDS Nicolás Rupcich Solo exhibition at @reiter_galleries Berlin 15 NOV 2024 – 18 JAN 2025 Nicolás Rupcich’s work critically examines the objectification of the world through the digital medium, reflecting on technology’s ability to reduce the sublime and empirical to mere data. In his most recent exhibition, Offline Islands at REITER Berlin, he presents a series of video installations and works developed over the past two years as a result of an artist’s residency in the Arctic Circle. These works primarily address themes related to image production in remote regions of our planet and the often-paradoxical nature of these processes. Mis obras en MAM, Chiloé. En lo personal es hasta la fecha la exposición más pertinente, vital y cargada de capas de sentido en la que he participado. Me alegro mucho de poder mostrar mis obras en el museo de la ciudad donde crecí. 10 AÑOS - EDF Hoy hace 10 años expuse por primera vez mi video EDF en la 11va Bienal de Artes Mediales en el Museo de Bellas Artes de Chile. En estos 10 años el video ha sido exhibido en múltiples exposiciones y festivales (Ars electronica, Austria. Palais de Tokyo, Francia. Istambul Modern, Turquía, etc.) ha sido una obra muy relevante para mí en lo personal, por lo que considero pertinente celebrar en esta ocasión su cumpleaños. Este video fue en su momento una suerte de proeza realizarlo, 2 semanas caminando solo y cargado por Torres Del Paine y Pingo, mas horas y horas de post-producción. En general se habla del video en las artes visuales como algo “fácil”, que aprietas play, proyectas y listo. La verdad es que, como todas las cosas, tras la superficie hay un proceso espeso y considerable de esfuerzo físico y mental. Quiero aprovechar de agradecer a todos quienes de alguna manera, cercana o distante, han apoyado el trabajo que uno hace desde este pequeño nicho hace ya un buen tiempo. EDF Video HD. Some impressions from my collaboration for BLACKOUT, a concert by Kommas Ensemble dedicated to the people of Iran — as an artistic gesture of solidarity with the current social developments taking place there. The date carries a special symbolic meaning: March 21 marks the Iranian New Year, Nowruz, which represents renewal, hope, and cultural continuity. Recap of my residency at @domagkateliers.art , Munich, between November and December. During this period I decided to focus on doing something with my hands, in this case a series of drawings, with no particular goal other than working from an imaginary I have been forming over already some time. This includes references to the surrounding German landscape and, in some cases, more abstract and automatic images, trying to generate something as immediate and direct as possible. Over the years I’ve worked with digital media, I’ve always kept drawing as a practice I return to from time to time. On this occasion, given the context of current trends in contemporary art, particularly everything related to AI, it felt like the right moment to produce images from a direct connection between head-hand-surface, and to take this practice more seriously. The intention is, at the least to state a position. This is a relevant moment to think about what’s coming next in relation to the media that shape our lives. Personally, I believe that the use of new tools should always go hand in hand with a critical stance toward them, avoiding the easy shortcuts these tools offer, which generally have the potential to produce only fatigue and atrophy. Herzliche Einladung zu einem Polarabend im Gemeinschaftsraum der Genossenschaft Wagnis, neben den Domagkateliers. Nicolás Rupcich ist derzeit Gastkünstler in Domagkateliers und bei Wagnis. Judith Neunhäuserer hat ihn auf einer gemeinsamen Segelschiffahrt im arktischen Ozean, an der Küste Spitzbergens entlang, kennen gelernt. Im artist talk erzählen die beiden von der Reise und daraus entstandenen künstlerischen Arbeiten.

💎 Nicolás Rupcich 💎 Nicolás Rupcich ist ein in Berlin lebender Künstler, der mit einer großen Bandbreite an Medien arbeitet, wobei er sich auf Experimente mit Fotografie, Video und Animation konzentriert. Seine Arbeit erforscht die Funktionen und Effekte des digitalen Bildes und wie Bildschirmkonventionen unser Verständnis von Realität beeinflussen. Aufgewachsen auf der Insel Chiloé, studierte er Bildende Kunst an der Universidad Finis Terrae und absolvierte einen Master in Visual Arts an der Universidad de Chile. 2012 kam er mit einem DAAD-Stipendium nach Deutschland und schloss einen Meisterschüler in Medienkunst an der HGB Leipzig ab. Rupcich hat international ausgestellt, zahlreiche Preise und Stipendien erhalten, und seine Werke sind in privaten wie musealen Sammlungen vertreten. ⏳ Seine A/V-Installation TRL ist noch bis Sonntag (28.9.25) im ZiMMT zu sehen. __________EN Nicolás Rupcich is an artist based in Berlin who works with photography, video, and animation. His works explore the functions and effects of digital images and how screen conventions shape our understanding of reality. Raised on the island of Chiloé, he studied fine arts in Santiago de Chile and completed a master’s degree at the Universidad de Chile. In 2012, he came to Germany on a DAAD scholarship and completed a postgraduate program (Meisterschüler) in media art at the HGB Leipzig. For TRL, Rupcich has produced a site-specific video for the ZiMMT Halle: Black Canyon (2025), composed with footage recorded in Kazakhstan. For this work, for the first time, he began by creating the sound design before working with the images, a strategy to explore the potential of ZiMMT’s 3D audio setup. The result is a blend of noise, drones, and diffuse imagery, with visual references that at moments recall classical oriental painting and, at the same time, digital territorial maps. The work offers a sonic and visual experience in which the canyon — these monumental fractures in the landscape — takes center stage. ——— Noch bis 28.
