After being diagnosed with a rare form of Thyroid Cancer at 19 years old - on her first day of Sophomore year at Harvard - Grace Taylor this year just completed her first ever marathon! It was a long journey to get to this point (treatments, therapy, sacrifices, and losses) but through it all she still manages to think she is the luckiest person in the world.

"When I was fourteen, my mom died of a stage 4 bifocal glioblastoma, but it is because of Mass General that she did not die when I was ten, something I will be forever thankful for," says Madison Oakes. She's running the @bostonmarathon with the @massgeneral marathon team for the second year, continuing the hard work of marathon training while fundraising. As a nurse who began her career at @brighamandwomens , Madison says she gets the chance "to help those with cancer beat the odds every day, inspired by the extra time I got with my own mother to pass that blessing on."

For Kiley McCarthy, running the @bostonmarathon for @massgeneral is about honoring the care her mom, Koren McCarthy, received at Mass General while she was battling stage 4 colon cancer. "I remember the fear and uncertainty my family felt, but from her very first visit, the doctors, nurses, and every staff member at Mass General treated her as more than just a patient," Kiley says "They truly cared, listened, and gave her hope when we needed it most. Their commitment to her treatment and their kindness to our whole family made all the difference, and I am forever grateful for the second chance they gave her."
This Monday, Hannah Clarke will check a lifelong dream off of her bucket list — but @bostonmarathon Monday is about so much more than that for her. "My friend Tasha was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma in her late twenties, and though she is the strongest woman I know, without the treatment she received at Mass General, I'm not sure she would be here today," Hannah says. "I asked her to be a bridesmaid in my wedding while she was receiving inpatient care, with both of us not knowing if she would make it to my wedding. Not only did she make my wedding, but she was healthy enough to walk down the aisle alongside me and dance the night away. It means so much to give back to the hospital that made her recovery possible."
In addition to Tasha, Hannah's mother received "unbelievable care" at Mass General over the course of her decades long battle with breast cancer. "Tasha and my mom had very different experiences, but the one thing that they both experienced was the unbelievable level of care at Mass General — made possible through funds like those raised by my fellow runners and I on this amazing team."
Dave Penta is running the @BostonMarathon in honor of his late wife, Lauren. For three years, Lauren battled glioblastoma at Mass General and Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, receiving treatment Dave describes as “second to none.”
“The staff were just wonderful. They cared, they listened, they understood, and they made you the most important thing. Having all of that allowed Lauren to spend 100% of her energy on her,” Dave says.
In between the hundreds of trips they took to the hospital, Dave and Lauren never gave up, filling their final years together with what they loved most.
“Before Lauren passed away, I promised her I would run for her, to give back with our daughter cheering me on,” he says. Read Dave’s story at the link in our bio.
Army ROTC cadet at @bostoncollege , @homebaseprogram volunteer, and Boston EMT Margot Sonia is running this year's @bostonmarathon with @massgeneral . "The level of teamwork, proficiency, thoroughness, and compassion that is expected of Mass General providers greatly contributes to my confidence in the care that my patients receive," she says of her experiences transporting patients to the hospital. "I am incredibly grateful for the work Mass General does both within its own walls and within the community to support the people of Boston and strive towards a brighter future."
Margot's work in emergency medicine has in part been inspired by her experience witnessing the Boson Marathon bombing as a child, watching her mother cross the finish line just eight minutes prior to the tragedy. "It is such an honor to run this race with a team that represents a large part of the initial response to the tragic events," Margot says, "With countless Mass General employees responding at medical tents and serving as a secondary response at the hospital itself."
