Growing up in a first-world country with immigrant parents is a privilege I am deeply grateful for and will always take pride in. As a child, it wasn’t always easy to understand who I was or where I belonged culturally. The education system around me wasn’t always inclusive enough to reflect my heritage, so if you had asked me back then what my heritage meant to me, I wouldn’t have had an answer.
Fast forward to today, I can proudly say that my heritage means embracing my identity as an Indo-Caribbean woman. It means carrying the richness of a diverse culture within me, honoring my roots, and recognizing the strength and determination that I come from. It’s something I now wear with pride and purpose.
I want to extend a special thank you to the Canadian Caribbean Indian Cultural Collective @theccicc and Run for Heritage @runforheritage for including me in such an incredible event. Your work creates space for people like myself to learn, grow, and inspire others to celebrate who we are. Today I had the opportunity to participate in the Run for Heritage 5K Run & Walkathon — a community event dedicated to celebrating Caribbean heritage, promoting healthy living, and supporting programs that give back. 🏃🏽♀️🧡
What stood out most wasn’t just the run itself, but the people. It was a powerful reminder that community is built when we choose to show up for one another. From every step taken to every moment shared, the energy was rooted in unity, culture, and collective support.
Experiences like this continue to shape my purpose—being present, giving back, and contributing to something bigger than myself. Because when we show up for each other, we create stronger, more connected communities.
