I had been thinking and training for this race for almost a year. This was after just starting to put a bib on at last years Flagstaff Crest since I hadn’t raced since Black Canyon in 2022. I felt confident that I would do well for the past few months but didn’t know how the day would play out. Then just over three weeks ago a nagging foot twinge (probably a starting stress fracture) gave way on a runand I knew things weren’t good. The X-ray confirmed and I was told to keep it immobile for 6-8 weeks. I took it as easy as I could and rode the bike and lifted for the next 2 weeks to keep moving for folks that know me they probably wouldn’t be surprised. I liken myself to a nuclear reactor you have to keep dissipating the heat and energy or it can be a problem I started lightly running on it last Tuesday and felt that I could keep testing. 1.5 miles turned to 4 then 6 then 10. I lit wasn’t comfortable by any means but I could tell that I wasn’t making it worse if I adjusted my gait it just hurt. That Friday I got the second X-ray and the doctor said it was healing and looked good and to keep off of it as much as possible. I failed to mention what was in the back of my mind but I knew then I would toe the line. I made a deal with myself that I would be stubborn but not stupid. It didn’t feel great the whole race and I had to change my gait to compensate which I think caused some of the gnarlliest blisters I’ve ever had and I could risk it on the rocky terrain so I had to walk more than I wanted but it held up. Shoutout to the @hoka Rocket X Trail and Tecton X3 that got me through 125 miles on a broken 4th metatarsal. I also want to thank my family for all the support not only on race day but for dealing with me. @runflagstaff flagstaff and the team there for the support and the community that they foster @walmsleyruns for showing up and giving some encouragement. @cocodona250 for the event and the community. @lilrunnerboiii and @ben._cook that jumped in last minute to pace. @corinne_shalvoyage for be willing to help too.
