This kitchen has been the bane of my existence in this house. Itās awkward. Itās ugly. I dislike it most of all the things⦠so Iām on a mission to make it better. Starting off with getting rid of this icky blue and replacing it with a more whimsical green to bring a little of the enchanted forest inside šØš²
The houseās carpet was disgusting and I have hated it since day 1. My friend @skibanana also had a personal hatred for the carpet since she had rented the house while we were sailing ⦠so it was nice that she was also eagerly to help me get rid of it. The original 1940ās planking will be suitable for now, especially when I finish oiling and sealing it. Girls get things done š ļøš§°
My grandparents helped raise my brother and I. We spent many days at their home, building forts, destroying their kitchen, and playing outside. When we got a bit older, my grandma helped me start a garden. Unfortunately, the dirt at their house was truly awful and for some reason we didnāt get good soil⦠but we planted things directly in the ground and watched things (sometimes struggle) to grow.
From what survived, we had an abundance of tomatoes, zucchiniās and string beans which lead to a lot of tomato sauce, zucchini bread and string bean casseroles š
My garden was a struggle this year. I fought pests constantly and really had to dial in a system to support plants at this altitude. Of all the things that surprised me, the two string bean vines I planted have produced an insane amount of beans, reminding me of my grandparents šš« Usually I make them the way my mom does (with a ton of bacon) but this time I added a few secret somethings passed on to me recently by a dear friend, resulting in an amazingly delicious finished product. Here was my chicken piccata, string beans and mashed potatoās last night š„š½ļø
Fun fact: I do not like hand washing dishes. At all. It makes sense on our sailboat, but here on land where dishwashers are available? Come on⦠itās silly, but honestly itās a time saver AND it keeps the dish clutter off the counter which helps me keep my mind from being cluttered as well.
HUGE thank you to our friends Henry and Ela for their dishwasher that came with their new home.
Laundry day vibes š Jon brought over a laundry line from his old tiny house, and even though we have a perfectly good dryer inside, days like this make me want to let the sunshine do the work.
It reminds me of my grandma ā she had one of those circular clotheslines in the backyard, and Iād play around it as a kid. Itās long gone now, but hanging our clothes today brought all those memories rushing back.
Thereās something grounding about doing things the slow way⦠connecting to old traditions, embracing the pause, and finding comfort in being just a little less instant. āļøššæ
It was about time the guest room got some love⦠new bed frame and bed side tables so our friends can feel more at home š now, time to fill the walls with photos!
The post Iāve been dreading to make⦠but itās time. Dear Prison Mike, Mikey Boo Boo, Mikey Boy⦠you are terribly missed. When we bought our house last year, you were our signing bonus. The only cat out of 7 that your previous owner couldnāt capture⦠you made it clear this was your house, and we were just lucky enough to live here š It took a little time, but you eventually chose me (Marissa) as your person. Iām forever grateful for the love, cuddles, and the unforgettable sound of you screaming outside our window š You were the only cat Cleo ever let cuddle her, and she misses you too. Love you always, buddy, hope you are resting peacefully or maybe living your best life with a new family ā¤ļø
