We are writing in strong support of CHMR and in response to the student union’s consideration of a motion to shut the station down.
Through our experiences as artists we have seen firsthand the meaningful role CHMR plays within both the student body and the community. It offers a unique and accessible platform where students, local musicians, emerging voices, and community members can share their work, perspectives, and stories.
CHMR contributes to our vibrant cultural environment by encouraging creativity, learning, and participation. It provides students with hands on opportunities to develop skills in broadcasting, media, and storytelling, while also connecting listeners to a wide range of programming that reflects the diversity of the community.
For artists like us, having spaces such as CHMR is incredibly important. It allows music and ideas to reach audiences in an authentic and community driven way, which builds connections that go beyond the campus.
We believe CHMR represents an important part of campus life and the broader cultural landscape of both our province and country. We respectfully encourage the student union to recognize its value and to continue supporting the station moving forward.
We ask you to consider the choice before you: whether to shut off the voices of the students and greater community, or to stand with them and ensure they continue to be broadcast. The voices that you represent are already speaking and now is your moment to choose whether those same voices will be heard or silenced. »
