Think low stakes, high reward! Bring your tender heart & curiosity. I know everything is unhinged out there! Let’s gather + play + imagine new stories inspired by “THE DECK OF MANY THINGS”. This idea sparked after a short story exercise I conjured up after Brian’s opening last weekend. The concept went from nascent to fully formed in about 20 minutes over lunch! ✨Big thanks to @phillip_niemeyer for the support. We’re looking forward to having you, it’s gonna be good.

Deck of Many Things: Write Night
Sunday, March 8, 4-6pm
Led by Deanna Ruff with Brian Dulaney
Join us for a late of afternoon of collaboration and chance. Deana & Brian will lead us in a writing exercise. We’ll write a few pages based on randomly selected cards from the exhibition “Deck of Many Things”. We’ll make a zine with the collected writing and mail particiapants a copy. Sharing your writing aloud is optional.

I considered writing an anatomy on melancholy… but I keep coming back to when Mavis Staples said “grim days call for fierce love” so— sharing a gratitude burst to archive the loving that’s kept me afloat in a year of global heartache. We made it. Know that I’m rooting for you in 2026. Hang on tight. I hope it’s full of fierce love & people you’d leave any party for.

What a gift to have had the last half of her 10 years.
She meant everything… it’s excruciating, you either know or you don’t.
To my chosen ones: thank you for sitting beside us in the clinic until her labored breathing ceased. I can still hear your whispers “no more pain”… & thank you for meeting me in the driveway, no questions asked, just whisky & a hug. for helping me carry her 90lb body. For sharing a cigarette & a silent prayer beneath the tree while the sun kept her warm a little longer. for helping cut through roots & limestone to dig her final resting place.
for the endless formats of love & care... from my depths,
I thank you. I’ll never forget it. 🥂 to dog days & good friends, I’m relieved we get to remember her together.
