California & Him, the single, out June 14th💌
i wrote california and him as a tribute to my father that most of the world would never know. about the struggles between addiction and love and how grief works in complex ways.
his memory that’s left for many people may be that of uncertainty and although circumstances were certainly not perfect i wanted to leave behind something that spoke to the empathy and compassion i have and the love i will always have for him. his life had tragedy and he made poor choices. he had a sickness but also a lot of love.
he lived in California for a significant stage in his life and and i can’t help but think of all the things that lead him to where he ended up and wrote my empathy into the song for him.
i like to think he checks in on me through the radio.
maybe i share some of the darkness in heart, his eyes. i see no purpose for strangers to him to know him for anything other than this song.
through the darkness and differences i share with him, he made me a writer; a man on fire.
