隙間のRomance
本展における「隙間」とは、Ruby Liuが長い間直面してきた不透明さで満ちた想像の世界です。台湾で生まれ、10代の初めにアメリカに移住したLiuは、自身のルーツやアイデンティティを考えるとき、その世界の住人であることを自覚します。
Liuは「隙間」にいることを好んでいます。その不透明さは彼女にとって安心感やインスピレーションであり、それはしばしばRomanceとして写真に写し出されます。彼女の写真は、私たちに「隙間」の美しさを見つけ、そのRomanceを深めさせてくれます。
本展は、「あなたは自分自身のことをどのようにカテゴライズする？」という私の疑問に対し、「わからない。ただ、なんとなく何かの間にいるような感じがする」とLiuが答えたところから始まりました。
彼女が表現する隙間のRomanceは、きっと多くの人が無意識に行なってしまう、ものごとへの‘意味付け‘を柔らかく否定し、より広い世界を見せてくれると信じています。

Ruby Liu’s exhibition explores the world of “Sukima (隙間)”, a realm she has inhabited much of her life—a place where she often feels anchored in uncertainty. Born in Taiwan and immigrating to America as a teenager, Liu realizes herself as a citizen of the world, reflecting deeply on her roots and identity.
In the liminal space of “Sukima,” Liu finds comfort and inspiration. Through her camera, she captures fleeting moments of uncertainty, reframing them as romance. Her photographs invite us to discover the beauty within the “Sukima”, allowing us to enrich romance.
This exhibition emerged after a conversation in which I asked, “How do you categorize yourself?” Liu’s honest answer was, “I don’t know. A lot of the time, it feels like I am stuck in between. I can’t really describe what it is. It feels strange.”
I believe the romance embedded in Liu’s photographs open new horizons for us, gently challenging our unconscious tendency to impose meaning on everything.
