Graphic novel ‘The Planet After Geoengineering’, conceived and designed by research-based practice Design Earth, led by Rania Ghosn and El Hadi Jazairy conjures up terrifying visions of our collective future, pointing to our shortcomings in realising, planning, acting, containing, and now, in the project’s timeline, facing the impact of the climate emergency - accelerated, if not birthed, by us. Drawn from a rather distant perspective in a measured, mechanical manner, these near monochrome illustrations subsume the character of architectural illustrations at points, broadening the appeal with doctored definition. - Read more: Link in Bio @ STIRworld.com - THINK - BOOKS AND MOVIES - Images : Isabella Sassi Farìas; Courtesy of Design Earth - @actar.publishers @rghosn @elhadi.jazairy @_designearth @officeoflukebulman @rubyann_li @monicabritthutton @reid.fell @citrusbiscuitconduit @mengfu.kuo @mitarchitecture @artsatmit @taubmancollege - #biennalearchitettura2021 #clifi #booksworthreading #graphicnovelart #illustrarch #monochromeart #graphicgang #proceduralart #STIR #STIRworld #StaySTIRred #stir_think @anmolahuja94

Thankful to be a part of this @_designearth work narrated by Donna Haraway 🙌 “The story comes full circle! in rhyming verse, Donna Haraway narrates the adventures of the Elephant Matriarch in her environmental rebellion. ‘Elephant in the Room,’ by DESIGN EARTH, is the story of a herd of elephants that charges out of the American Museum of Natural History to stomach the legacies of colonialism, sexism, and racism - all outlined by Haraway in her text ‘Teddy Bear Patriarchy.’” The animation will be screened tonight at 9pm EST in The Climate Imaginary roundtable for Melbourne Design Week. Project Team: Rania Ghosn, El Hadi Jazairy, Anhong Li, Monica Hutton 🐘

#Regram of “Elephant in the Room” by @_designearth , an architectural practice led by Taubman College Associate Professor El Hadi Jazairy and Rania Ghosn. Among the winning proposals for @museumsforclimateaction , an international design competition to rethink museums as a radical form of climate action, “Elephant in the Room” offers a fantastical story in which a taxidermy elephant comes to life and forces museums and wider society to confront their role in climate change. In addition to Jazairy and Ghosn, the project team includes Anhong Li (@rubyann_li ) and Monica Hutton (@monicabritthutton ). Jazairy’s research investigates aesthetic forms of environmental engagement to visualize how urban systems transform the Earth. He holds a Doctorate of Design from Harvard University, a Master of Architecture from Cornell University, and a Bachelor of Architecture from La Cambre in Brussels. Jazairy co-authored Geostories: Another Architecture for the Environment (New York: Actar, 2018) and Geographies of Trash (New York: Actar, 2015), and he is the founding editor of New Geographies and editor-in-chief of NG 4: Scales of the Earth (Harvard GSD, 2010). DESIGN EARTH has exhibited widely in venues such as the US Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Sharjah Biennial, and the Times Museum in Guangzhou. It has been awarded prizes internationally, including the Architectural League of New York’s Prize for Young Architects + Designers and the Jacques Rougerie Foundation’s First Prize. . . . #TaubmanCollege #FacultyFriday #umicharts #UMich #GoBlue #UMsocial #IMadeThat #SOArch #StudyArchitecture #SuperArchitects #Architecture #Representation #next_top_architects #archi_students #nextarch #DesignBoom #Dezeen #ArchDaily #designdaily

“Urban Wall as Heterotopia” by Anhong Li (@rubyann_li ) for ARCH 562 / UD 722 Propositions Studio "Imag(e)ing the Urban Water Commons" with María Arquero de Alarcón (@mjoarquero ). This project scrutinizes Ahmedabad’s recent development trends and addresses the legacy of social segregation, profit-driving policy, spatial erasure, and citizens’ identity loss. The outcomes are the progressive wiping off of historic urban fabric and the loss of a diverse citizenship. The project takes on the pervasive type of the “urban wall” as a potential form of power resistance. Through the registration of contextual observations, walls become containers of a multiplicity of identities and markers of difference in the urban continuum. This project received an Honorable Mention in the 2020 Student Show. Author and Source: @_designearth Design Earth Project Team: Rania Ghosn, El Hadi Jazairy, Anhong Li @rubyann_li In the early morning hours of 15 April 1912, the RMS Titanic British passenger liner sank in the North Atlantic Ocean after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. The story of the ocean liner has been told hundreds of times. This story is about the block of ice. The iceberg began its slow journey to the North Atlantic over three thousand years ago with snowfall on the western coast of Greenland. The glacier that produced this iceberg has been pushing much more ice into the ocean over the past years. Located on the west coast of Greenland, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, Ilulissat Icefjord is the sea mouth of one of the fastest moving and most active glaciers in the world. The glacier annually calves over 35 km3 of ice, more than any other glacier outside Antarctica, and flows at a speed of 40 meters per day, double what it was 10 years ago. NASA suggests that the melting and speed increase of the Greenland ice sheet has caused the magnetic North Pole to move eastward. The ice melting is mainly recorded during the summer season from April to October, which is also the season for tourism activities. Ilulissat offers both scientists and visitors easy access for a close view of the calving glacier. Tourists are flocking to the Arctic specifically to see endangered environments before they go extinct. The Ilulissat Icefjord is one such site of “doomsday” or “last chance” tourism. The combination of a huge ice-sheet and the dramatic sounds of a fast-moving glacial ice-stream calving into a fjord full of icebergs make for a dramatic and awe-inspiring observation of the Earth’s history and future. #designearth #geostories #architecture #anthropocene #climatechange #architecturaldrawing #planet #earth #world #arquitectura #mapa #map #mapping #carta #carte #cartography #cartografia #cartographie #art #drawing #beauty #atlas #dibujo #territory #territorio #landscape #icebergs #geography #inspiration #design
