For the past couple months I have been making paintings on paper, working fast and small, trying to change things up in the studio. I am so excited to share these new works at @kb.bkny — show opens February 13 :)

Drawing respectively from public and private photographic archives, Rand’s and Beenhouwer’s paintings withhold resolution; they depict vignettes of anonymous people and everyday spaces, charged with cinematic momentum, like clues without an explanation. Both painters render sharp focus with soft marks, while moments of precise detail dissolve into exposed underimages. Beenhouwer’s vibrant palette, tinged with warm reds and fluorescent pinks, juxtaposes Rand’s chromatically drained surfaces, which seem to rest beneath a layer of soot and ash. Together, these works stage dichotomies between optimism and pessimism, personal and universal, anticipation and aftermath. These opposing forces pull taut the slack line between what was and what comes next, offering us the material of dreams, memories, and premonitions.
Join us for the opening on 10/9 from 6:30–9:30, with gallery hours continuing Saturday 10/11 and Sunday 10/12 from 12:00–4:00.
