About 14% of U.S. military veterans have a drug or alcohol problem, and 7% of them will experience post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, during their lifetime.
In our next episode, we confront the reality that veterans need support and medical treatment for both mental health and addiction. Dr. Shannon Blakey of RTI International discusses her research on trauma-informed care and explains why addressing a traumatic memory in combination with substance use treatment may help military veterans heal.
We also explore the challenge of asking for help within a military culture built on resilience and strength, and how military experiences can shape perceptions of treatment and support.

May the 4th be with you… and with every RTI volunteer who helped make this year’s North Carolina Science Festival a success.
Across April, you brought science to life—guiding hands-on demos, answering questions, and sparking curiosity in the next generation of explorers. Whether it was a first experiment or a future career moment, you helped make it real.
Like any great mission, it took a dedicated team.
You showed up with energy, expertise, and a willingness to connect, and that’s what made the difference.
Because of you, science didn’t just stay in the lab.
It reached communities, classrooms, and families across North Carolina.
Thank you for being part of the mission.

On the last day of the 2026 North Carolina Science Festival, we want to share our deepest appreciation with everyone who celebrated this year’s theme, “Science Matters!”
From the mountains to the coast, hundreds of events spanning areas of STEAM brought hands-on, exciting, and awe-inspiring initiatives to thousands of participants. With the help of incredible partners, sponsors, scientists, and attendees, we’re proud to have played a part in spreading the love of science across the state. Thank you, North Carolina. See y’all in 2027!

🏙️ What does it take to build a city?
At the Mountain Science Expo, RTI sponsored the Build a City experience—where students and families explored how communities come together from the ground up.
From planning neighborhoods to thinking through transportation, energy, and sustainability, participants got a hands-on look at how science shapes the places we live.
Because science isn’t just something we study.
It’s something we build with.
Thanks to everyone who stopped by and helped bring a future city to life.

We were proud to welcome The Honor Foundation to RTI’s Research Triangle Park campus as part of their Trek visiting North Carolina businesses.
Hosted by the RTI VALoR Circle, the visit brought together transitioning Service members and Veterans from the Special Operations community for an inside look at careers across RTI. Fellows connected with RTI employees, shared experiences, and explored how their leadership and mission-driven skills can translate into new opportunities.
We were also honored to host Secretary Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette, North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, who spent time engaging with both the Fellows and RTI staff.
We’re proud to support those who have served as they navigate what’s next.
Earth Week got a little greener at RTI. 🌎🥕🍓
Thank you to Cindy Shetensky with FLIK Hospitality for bringing the Pop-up Farmer’s Market to life, and to John Nichols and the RTI Sustainability team for helping make it happen.
We loved seeing employees stop by, grab fresh produce and take home reusable produce bags shaped like grapes, strawberries and carrots.
Small choices add up, and this was a fun one. 🌱
The Mountain Science Expo is bringing hands-on science, live demos, and outdoor discovery to The North Carolina Arboretum on April 25.
From interactive exhibits to real scientists sharing their work, it’s a chance for families to explore how science shows up in everyday life.
Part of North Carolina Science Festival, this event is a great reminder that science is happening in every corner of the state.
