We’re more connected through screens than ever before, yet hungry for places that ask us to slow down and engage.
Great design doesn’t start with a blank canvas. It starts by listening to the stories a community already carries. When the details invite a closer look, a space becomes more than a place we pass through. It becomes a place we belong.

A Detour Through Nashville Yards
While attending the @urbanlandinstitute Spring Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, Executive Director Harry Mark, FAIA and Director of Design Jeff Hertzler took a stroll through @nashvilleyards to see RSM Design’s installed work up close. RSM Design collaborated on the environmental graphic design, wayfinding, digital integration, and tenant signage criteria for this innovative mixed-use district.
Reach out to Jeff and Harry via email or LinkedIn to further discuss Nashville Yards through the lens of storytelling, placemaking, and a forward-thinking approach to urban development.
Every place holds a story waiting to be told. Public art and murals are how we give those stories a voice, transforming blank walls into beacons for community gathering and forgotten corridors into spaces of color, meaning, and connection.
The RaDD Artwalk along San Diego’s waterfront is one of those stories in motion. Stretching six blocks across a mixed-use district of life science facilities, offices, cultural venues, shops, and public gathering spaces, it turns a research and development hub into an open-air gallery. Molecular structures, elemental patterns, and laboratory imagery nod to the innovation happening inside, while palettes drawn from kelp forests, coastal waters, Torrey Pines, and local sandstone root the experience firmly in place.

Celebrating Earth Day at RSM Design!
This year, the we dug our hands in the soil. Across our studios, the RSM Design team tended garden beds, crafted succulent arrangements, picked up new plants, and shared a farm-to-table lunch grown right outside our offices.
It was a good reminder that there’s a season for everything: planting, harvesting, and gathering around the table to enjoy it together.
What people carry with them when they leave a place is not the logo or the project name. It’s the feeling.
In his article, Rooted in Place: The Art of Authentic Storytelling in Urban Development, Jeff Hertzler, Director of Design, explores how the most meaningful urban developments don’t manufacture identity. They uncover it, through discovery, context, and a deep listening to what a place already has to say.
