Your media has to match the way you actually grow. Not just the way the bag is marketed.
A lot of growers grab a bag without thinking about whether it fits their feeding frequency, their environment, or the way they manage dry back. That mismatch is usually where the frustration starts.
Maxwell from @royalgoldsoils broke it down on the floor of @necanncon Boston.
The core idea is straightforward. Not every space is the same. Not every feeding style is the same. And that means not every grower should be running the same media.
If you want to feed aggressively and push your plants hard, coco is your lane. It holds moisture but also holds oxygen in the root zone, which is why you can feed more frequently than you can with a peat based mix. Royal Gold's Tupur blend is built specifically for that style. High porosity, designed to be fed, and forgiving enough that overwatering becomes a much harder mistake to make.
If you do not want to feed on a daily basis coco is probably not your best starting point. Maxwell pointed to other Royal Gold options with more water retention for growers who want less maintenance and a slower feeding cycle.
One thing that does not change regardless of which direction you go in coco. Calcium is paramount. Coco fiber takes up calcium at a much higher rate than peat based media. If you are not supplementing calcium consistently you will feel it.
In coco, always be feeding.
That was Maxwell's line, and it is the part a lot of growers need to hear before they blame the bag, the nutrients, or the plant.
Royal Gold growers, what blend are you running right now and what do you like about it?
14 plants to put out 1st run along with setting up irrigation. Cold Hardy leafy greens! Then the next group should be ready in 2 weeks and peppers hopefully in a month. I’ll get some footage for ya in be back in a Garden Reveal day soon……. See ya soon
