This life, this is the plan me and my mama came up with 20 years ago. Turn entrepreneurship into an exit strategy in a town that had a 10% unemployment rate, or .7 jobs per person.
I would have to be an excellent student to make it work for me today. That was component one of the plan. A way to get respect and opportunity when I had no status or economic advantage. I had to go as far as I could, from a town where only 6% of residents hold a Master’s degree. This component was non negotiable. It would get my foot in the door, she told me.
Component two of the plan was to be pleasant. Hardworking, friendly, and agreeable gets the job. Being unpleasant would be a careless reason to lose an opportunity. Personality, or social intelligence, would give me a chance if no one could tell I was from a household of violence and chaos.
She told me I would be underestimated for a long time so resilience would be the key component. With these three components I would lay the groundwork for a thriving business that would pay me to improve my skills, make connections, and gain experience.
She was real with me that it would be hard but nobody can describe this part-
when you fight that hard to survive, it follows you.
It shows up in your relationships.
In how you trust.
In how you love.
In how you move through the world.
In how you see the world.
It becomes hard to relate to people who didn’t learn opportunity hung on a compromise. That advancement would require swallowing your feelings. That seeing injustice was something to get used to. That without the perfect grades it would cost more. That without putting up with bullshit it would cost more. That saying what I thought could end everything. That one mistake was not an option.
That fighting alone seemed impossible sometimes but it was safer than letting someone reckless in to destroy everything I’d been basically killing myself for.
That I made a promise to my mom I could never neglect.
I’ve built a glass castle.
That’s what happens when you’re building your way out of something I guess… and that’s just the way it is.•

Woke up feeling 30 and flirty 🍸
For my 30th, I decided to go back to where it all started. Almost half my life was spent in SoCal & so I wanted to ring in the new year doing all the things I loved doing as a kid.
Here's to a decade full of adventures, success, laughs, and cute clothes. 😘
