Happy to share a glimpse of the final review from Architecture of Survival, the studio I taught this winter to Year 2 students in the BDCI program (Bachelor of Design in City Innovation) @ucalgarysapl
The studio explored mask design as body-scale architecture treating the mask not as an accessory, but as an architectural artifact emerging in response to atmosphere. Students developed parametric systems that translate environmental, political, and sensory conditions into form, texture, and material behavior.
Proud of the work, the rigor, and the level of resolution these students achieved.

The gaze is everywhere and nowhere at once - ambient, continuous, atmospheric.
Not an event, but a condition.
The body enters as both figure and data.
Each step inscribes itself into the system, captured not as image but as trajectory, as behavior.
To move is to be indexed.
To exist is to be processed.
There is no outside to this condition, only gradients of visibility.
Nothing is hidden, because nothing can be hidden.
The runway unfolds as an urban fiction:
a corridor of embedded observers,
a stage where the body moves against the weight of the monumental,
against the quiet authority of systems that never blink.
To walk here is not performance.
It is negotiation.
It is defiance.

To reveal is to acknowledge the act of making - to accept that beauty is a result of structure, not its disguise. In this collection the garments do not hide their formation they articulate it.
The collection challenges the conventional hierarchy between finished and unfinished, raw and refined. It suggests that the essence of beauty may reside in the process itself - in what remains visible, unpolished, and real.

Tomorrow marks the final gallery and reception for my Refabricate Studio, a second-year BDCI investigation into fashion as an ecological instrument where discarded materials evolve into speculative skins and the body becomes a site of environmental negotiation.
Throughout the semester, my students have crafted new forms of wearability through computational design, material experimentation, and emergent post-waste aesthetics.
We’d love to share their work with you.

Come see the great work of my students and witness a future where fashion thinks and makes statements.

Set against the raw geometry of brutalism, the pieces propose a new kind of minimalism: one that is grounded in authenticity, where the imperfection of the process becomes the most refined gesture.

This collection unfolds inside a concrete castle, a monumental structure suspended between ruin and control. The space is defined by weight and stillness: thick walls, exposed textures, and an overwhelming presence of material. It is a world built on permanence, where concrete replaces ornament, and silence replaces spectacle.

This collection investigates how elegance can emerge not from decoration, but from the raw truth of materials and the logic of construction.
Drawing from brutalist architecture, it rejects the polished and the ornamental in favor of what is structural, exposed, and deliberate.
Denim, a material rooted in labor and function, becomes the foundation for this exploration. When deconstructed, cut, and reassembled, its inherent strength and texture reveal an unexpected refinement - one that comes from precision, not embellishment. Each garment embraces this process: visible seams, open edges, and structural layering become part of the aesthetic language.

Here, styling is language...
Each figure is in a state of becoming. My models slip between categories, becoming what they need to survive.
