📍229 W. Saratoga 🩵❤️💛
just wrapped up this very special mural, the story and motive to bring this wall to life was a gesture of love.
Vases are included in the majority of my work because they symbolize many things both literally and metaphorically, being held, to belong, and act as a motif of time and place: connecting the past present and future.
This was a dream wall to paint, i couldn’t have done it without such a hardworking crew @catherinerupanmapp , Ale y Martinez who powered through the heat and made me cry laughing every damn day with our antics 🩵

I really enjoyed painting this wall even though it was a last minute decision 💙 I intentionally kept it loose as I would in an underpainting in the studio. Second mural of the year and many more to come

Child of The Stars
Acrylic on canvas, 2023

In the past 50 years, anthropologists and archaeologists have proposed a range of theories about the #Venusfigurines created during the Upper Paleolithic period (40,000–20,000 BCE). interpretations in the past 50 years framed these figures as objects of male desire, labeling them as “prehistoric erotica”. These ideas have since been widely critiqued for projecting modern assumptions about sexuality onto ancient cultures.
Predating 1960 though, alternative ideas emerged. Some scholars theorized the figurines were self portraits made by #women, based on the perspective of looking down at one’s own body. Most commonly they’re interpreted as symbols of fertility or worship though these claims remain speculative due to the absence of records.
A persistent interpretation states these works within cultures may have revered women’s ability of carrying life, though the idea of a universally “matriarchal” prehistoric society is not proven. What’s clear is that recent interpretations particularly those emphasizing eroticism, reflect the biases of the researchers themselves rather than definitive evidence from the archaeological evidence.
I think it’s comical that even with today’s technologies and interdisciplinary approaches, these interpretations continue to echo reductive views and objectify the female body. These theories show how contemporary perspectives can shape our understanding of the past.
Child of The Stars duels with these competing narratives by oscillating between objectification and reverence, while ultimately resisting both and demanding autonomy. The figures of the women and figurines in the painting assert a presence that demands respect and distance, refusing to be confined to a singular interpretation.
The Chalice and the Blade is a book that I refer to often, it explores the possibility of partnership-based societies and examines archaeological and mythological evidence suggesting cultures worldwide where women were held in high regard. While some of its claims are still debated it continues to offer framework for reimagining social structures beyond the models today.
