“Endeavour Through Adversity”
On their way home from the Kyle of Lochalsh, the team made one very important stop at Spean Bridge. 🫡
•
For most people, it is a striking memorial in an incredible location. But for the three Royal Marines in the ROW4MND crew, this place carries something much deeper.
•
Spean Bridge is home to the Commando Memorial, overlooking the land around Achnacarry where, during the Second World War, Commando soldiers underwent some of the toughest military training imaginable.
•
Those who passed earned the right to wear the famous Green Beret, a symbol of courage, endurance, discipline, initiative and teamwork. 💚
•
As a crew the team have lived the Commando Spirit everytime they go on the water and the values all Royal Marines share - Courage, Determination, Unselfishness and Cheerfulness in the face of adversity. 🙌
•
Fittingly, the words on the memorial read: “United We Conquer”, and ROW4MND is built on exactly that idea. A crew, a support team, families, charities, donors, and followers, all pulling together towards one huge aim: raising £57 million to help find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease.
•
After a tough few days rowing the west coast of Scotland, this was a powerful place to pause, remember, and reset before heading home. 🙏

Mission accomplished! 💪
•
The crew made land safely yesterday, and are now on there way back home. But, as Matt explains, resting on their laurels is not the plan! Plenty of erg work to prepare them selves for the final leg of this journey in August, PLUS a really BIG announcement about a new expedition in 2027 - all will be revealed on this channel soon! 🔜
•
For now, just a HUGE thank you to every one that supported the team in getting this leg completed. Thank you to the people behind the scenes, thank you for the random acts of kindness from complete strangers, and thank you to every single one of you that donated to this brilliant cause. 🙏
•

With less than 1 nautical mile left to row, the team are approaching their final destination for this leg; the Kyle of Lochalsh. 🏁
•
It's been a tough, but brilliant, few days on the water, that makes up leg 3 of their row around the British coastline. Leg 4 will be completed when the team return in August. 🗓️
•
But, stand by, an announcement of a new adventure is incoming - we'll share all on this channel very soon! 🤩
•
For now, we're glued to the tracker as watch the team make their final approach. 🗺️📍👀

There is no doubt about it, these expeditions take their toll on the guys. 😯
•
Here Matt updates us at 0300 from the stern 'kennel', and we can hear in his voice how tired he is. 😫
•
The team have put everything into these expeditions, expeditions that are going to get considerably longer and harder as the expedition series continues. 🚣♂️
•
This aim of raising £57 million to find a cure for MND isn't just a side quest, it's the everything this expedition is set up to do. It's their whole focus right now. Finding a cure for this awful condition, would be one of the most amazing things that humans can do, and funding that work is for utmost importance.

In the middle of the night, Mike and the rest of the ROW4MND team were up and readying themselves to push off once more! 💪
•
They waited out the weather at the Western Isles Hotel (big thank you to @hotelwesternisles for their support!), and then as soon as the tides were right they got ready to push off. 🚣♂️
•
The plan is to head up to Skye, navigate around the eastern coast of the island, eventually making land at Kyle Harbour on the mainland, within sight of the famous Skye bridge. 🌉

After a short stop in Tobermory to wait out the weather, the team intend to departing at 00:30 on Wednesday 6th to round Ardnamurchan Point at slack water. 🚣♂️
•
As they round the point they'll be keeping 1 nautical mile off it to avoid the turbulent water that is created here. 👌
•
The team then aim to arrive at the narrow channel linking the Sound of Sleat and Lock Alsh at 16:00 - this bit is extremely important; it's the only opportunity to safely navigate this channel in this boat, and if they miss it, they'll need to wait until 04:00 the following day. 😯
•
The plan is to reach Kyle Harbour to finish this leg at 17:30 or 05:30 (tide window dependent). 🌊
•
If you are in the area, please do come down to say hello to the team before they leave for home on Thursday morning. 🥰
•
A big shout out must go to everyone supporting the crew; the harbour master at Tobermory who very kindly covered their mooring fees, Fraser a local who found them some parts to fix their rudder, the Skye hotel who have offered rooms should we need them to rest on arrival, Gwyn their Logistics Legend who keeps this whole thing running on land, and of course the team's families back home who support the team, giving up their time to push this mission forward. 🙏
•
The aim is to return to Kyle Harbour, and complete this circumnavigation in August. BUT....they have some really exciting news coming for 2027 coming soon...stay connected, it’s going to be a good one 🥶🥶🥶

The team have made it to Tobermory, and have taken shelter there from the incoming strong winds. 🌬️
•
They've rowed a huge 139 nautical miles from Port Logan, weaving amongst the Scottish islands as they went. 🏝️
•
Here the team are going to take some time to fix a couple of rudder issues, clean the boat up, and eat some real food. In that order. Kit then self - after all, there are three Royal Marines on board! 🫡
•
Looking at the forecasts right now, it looks like the team may be here until Wednesday, but they'll continually be checking on the options as they develop. 👀

In the very early hours of the morning, in his ongoing mission to plague Mike's social media feed(!), Matt gives us the latest update. 🗣️
•
After sheltering near the CalMac ferry terminal in Craignure Bay, the team lifted anchor once more and continued west down the Sound of Mull. ⬅️
•
However, whilst they made progress towards Tobermory, they winds were increasing, and the new forecast gives winds that are probably too strong to row into for the next 24-48 hours, so potentially they will need to have an enforced break once they make Tobermory. 😲

As the team pushed hard to get north, the conditions turned, and it became much more of a battle than they'd expected. 😲
•
Caught out by stronger than expected winds, the team took the sensible option of cutting West and into the sheltered anchorage at Craignure. ⚓
•
And it's those kind of decisions that make a UK coastal row successful - all of the time the team are thinking of not just a plan A, but a plan B and often a C and a D. Things change rapidly out here, and so proper planning with lots of options, is going to give them the best chance of success. 💪
•
Spirits are high though, and they'll now wait here until 0100 tonight! 🕐

How was your Sunday lunch? The team's was pretty magical! 🪄
•
It doesn't seem to matter how many encounters they have with dolphins, it always evokes feelings of happiness within the crew - it takes the act of rowing from a monotonous grind to a joyful fascination in what these creatures are doing. 🤗
•
If you are following the journey, please please donate to the cause - none of your money will go on the costs of the expedition, that's all been privately covered - 100% of your donations will go towards @mndassociation , @myname5doddie and @leedshospitalscharity - with the aim to raise £57 million, in a bid to find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease.
