Vienna Dings Week

Die Designer*innen der Gruppenausstellung FOKUS beim gemeinsamen Brunch in der Festivalzentrale. FOKUS: Ageing Entlang der drei Kapitel „Working With Nature“, „Embracing Change“ und „Collaborating with the Past and Present“ brachte die Gastkuration Sandra Nuut bei der VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2025 internationale Designpositionen zusammen, die sich auf poetische, experimentelle und konzeptionelle Art mit dem Altern befassen. Basso – alto, hier – dort, voll – leer: Die Bar an der Mailänder Via Plinio ist nicht nur ein Referenzpunkt italienischer Cocktailkultur, sondern auch der internationalen Designszene. Genauso wie Salone del Mobile und Fuorisalone (also die Mailänder Möbelmesse und ihr Parallelprogramm) ist der Zirkus rund um die Bar Basso gleichermaßen Klischee wie Notwendigkeit. Kopie und Persiflage sind unmöglich und unumgänglich. In diesem Sinne musste die BAR ALTO im ersten Stock der VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Festivalzentrale Zuflucht nehmen und mit einer Autowerkstatt anstelle eines Kreisverkehrs auskommen. Auch die gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse sind hier umgekehrt: Die Drinks dieser stationären Tour an einen der Sehnsuchtsorte der Designwelt macht der Direktor. Zumindest Gedränge wird es dort, wo einst das Salettl im Garten des Einkehrgasthofs „Zur Grünen Weintraube“ stand, trotzdem geben. Außer Drinks erhielten die Gäste von Direktor Gabriel Rolands Installation BAR ALTO einen Negroni-Becher von FRANZI.IST aus der Design Everyday-Edition 2022. © eSeL.at - Robert Puteanu (1-8), Christoph Wimmer (8-12)

THE TEAM ABOUT THE TEAM — Gabriel Roland, Director When Gabriel strolls into our office (Laura’s and mine) and leans against the bookshelf, one thing is certain: things are about to get exciting. And definitely funny. How Gabriel manages to dash from one appointment to the next day after day, full of energy and enthusiasm—solving all kinds of problems, sometimes in just a matter of minutes—and still finds time to pick up his daughter from kindergarten, remains a mystery to me. Perhaps it’s his inner calm and analytical mindset that get him through the day. Gabriel is also someone who’s always ready to roll up his sleeves—never too proud to get his hands dirty—and somehow keeps an eye on even the tiniest detail, for better or worse. It’s precisely this broad curiosity and unique ability to look at situations from every possible angle—even ones you didn’t know existed—that make him the kind of director you’re proud and happy to shape a festival under. On a personal level, Gabriel is probably the most pleasant boss one could wish for: if you have a problem or just need to vent for a minute, you walk into his office—and walk out with new motivation and possible solutions. Thank you, Gabriel, for leading me and the team through stressful times with so much empathy, humor, and calm.
