NEW RELEASE
The Sierra (Aaron Rothman)
A visual exploration of the majestic yet fragile Sierra Nevada, reflecting on climate change, memory, and how we see and shape nature today.
The Sierra revisits the Sierra Nevada mountains through the context of today’s climate crisis, a landscape that has long shaped American ideas of wilderness. @rothman_aaron (US) seeks to evoke the physical experience of being in the mountains while registering the environmental changes reshaping the region. His personal connection to the region is marked by a growing sense of dread and loss as signs of climate change become increasingly visible. Drawing inspiration from historical landscape painters, Rothman prompts reflection on how traditional representations have shaped our perception of wilderness, and how idealising it as pristine may have contributed to its present vulnerability.

Thanks to @zoe.idb for a very nice piece on The Sierra in @loeildelaphotographie
A bit of the french version in honor of Paris Photo, where the book will be with @eriskayconnection but I, alas, will not. English version also online.
When your kid wants a David Lynch themed bday/graduation party, you have to go all out…
Shoutout to @cakesbystiggy for the amazing Eraserhead baby cake
Finally made good pics of my piece up at @phxart new Arts of the Americas galleries. In some good company including Thomas Hill, a strange and amazing Maxfield Parrish landscape, Maynard Dixon, and an incredible huge head by Virgil Ortiz.
I’m really happy to be part of this redo of this wing of the museum. The collection is truly revitalized, and the inclusion of contemporary works throughout (of course I’m biased, but not just mine) helps bring everything to life.
Unfortunately these galleries are closing for a few months for some building work, but they will reopen later this summer.
I was so excited to find The Sierra on the shelf at @arcanabooks in LA recently. It’s probably my favorite art book store. Well worth a stop if you’re ever in Culver City, and give yourself some time — they have A LOT of great stuff.
Very happy to have “The Sierra” included in this exhibit in Rome of books looking at land, landscape and nature. Wish I could be there to see all these amazing books! Thanks @osservatoriomobilenordest@mass_sordi and @eriskayconnection

@rothman_aaron works in an iterative process split between fieldwork and digital editing. In the field, he makes large-format photographs in response to meaningful natural encounters, such as the immeasurable sense of space evinced by a distant mountain peak, the sheltering confines of a copse of trees at dusk, or the devastation of a recently charred section of forest. In the studio, he determines their final form. Some images remain as they were, others are transformed by inverting colours, layering multiple views of a single place, or washing out an image to the edge of visibility. These interventions aim to unsettle the viewer, creating imagery that feels both familiar and strange.
