New team member alert🚨
@adam_murphy002 joins us and IGNITE UCC full time as part of his university placement. Adam is a Quercus Talented Students Program UCC athlete and Rowing Ireland athlete. Adam has 3 world championship medals, multiple national championships and acts as a high performance liaison for ucc rowing.
He has been testing our product and is working with our designers, developers and other team members on the next phases of the product. Adam will continue to be hugely helpful in making high performance analytics accessible to all rowers and coaches over the next few months 🚀
ROTEQ wouldn’t exist without the Irish startup and research ecosystem around us.
Support from Enterprise Ireland, IGNITE UCC, University of Galway Startup 100, and working alongside centres like Nimbus and ICHEC gave us the space to go full-time and tackle problems that were bigger than we expected.
From complex software challenges to prototyping hardware built specifically for rowing, this journey has been shaped by people, programmes, and institutions willing to back early ideas and early founders.

The early days.
Before polished software or automated insights, there was just showing up — and a lot of labour. Early mornings in boat sheds. Sensors bolted on. Measurements taken by hand. Data brought home, processed late, then brought back again for long conversations with rowers and coaches. Presentations on bed sheets hung up on boat sheds - you make do with what you have!
Clubs we worked with, including Bish Rowing Club, went on to win national championships (Swipe to see their incredible close win). Being part of that journey is something we’re still proud of — but it relied on an expert willing to spend hours each week translating data into understanding.
Nothing was streamlined. Nothing was scalable.
But every step showed us what actually mattered.
This was how the foundation was built.

The Problem Uncovered
Behind every great idea is a moment of realisation. For us, it was seeing how many rowing clubs were trying their best, but still left without the tools to truly support their athletes. Equipment sat unused, data felt overwhelming, and coaches were stretched thin.
ROTEQ was built to make things simpler — to give every rower and coach clarity, confidence, and a way to actually move forward.

The Research Question That Started It All
ROTEQ began with a simple question: How do you row faster for the same effort?
It wasn’t a startup idea at first—it was a research problem. We removed the “human variability” from the equation. We kept power constant and measured how different techniques changed a boat’s acceleration curve. We built custom software, ran the analysis… and the results surprised us.
So we set a goal:Create an algorithm that could predict acceleration from force… and force from acceleration.Input → model → output. Output → model → input. If we could do this we could mathematically explain what makes a rowing boat go faster for the same power.
That’s when the ROTEQ algorithm began to take shape.
