Before MSPs can take their seats in the Scottish Parliament, they are required to swear allegiance to the King.
In this yearโs oath-taking, several MSPs added their own words: references to the people of Scotland, their constituents, or statements made under protest.
Those additions matter, they reflect a growing discomfort with the idea that elected representatives must first pledge loyalty to an unelected monarch before they can serve the public who voted for them.
In a modern democracy, allegiance should flow upward from the people, not downward from the Crown.
