Rainbow, finally.
Since moving to Rhode Island, I’ve been waiting for a chance to get this shot: a rainbow over the Rhode Island State House. I didn’t think I’d be able to go out last night after the rain came through since parental duties and bedtime were about to happen. But my daughter, who just turned 4, said she wanted to go take pictures of the sunset. So my junior photographer and I headed out to quickly find a beautiful double rainbow overhead. Needless to say, this is an image I’ll cherish for a really long time.

And the sunrise of the year goes to…
This was by far the most intense sunrise I’ve photographed in 2024. It’s been a year where getting out has been more challenging, but I sure am glad to have made it out to see the sunrise over the Newport Bridge Monday morning. It was an intense 10 minutes of color, and the iconic bridge was perfectly positioned! And to top it off, the normally choppy waters around the bridge were as calm as could be for the reflection to appear.

The Fisherman and the Full Moon
-
This month’s Full Buck moon was my first time out to photograph the moon in a year! Rhode Island has so many amazing locations to catch the full moon rising so I was happy to get out. At Point Judith, I found this fisherman fighting with the sea, literally. He was throwing himself into the crashing waves, nearly getting swallowed up each time. Eventually the hard work paid off with a catch as the moon arrived.

Tuesday morning’s lunar eclipse event did not disappoint, and tested my photography brain more than any image has in a long time! The eclipse reached totality on the east coast as the sun was coming up. Meaning most of us would be able to clearly see, and enjoy the view, during its partial stages.
Fortunately in Providence, clouds stayed away and the Rhode Island State House served as the perfect spot to capture the moon just before daybreak.
This image is the combination of two photos taken over about 6 seconds as my frozen fingers fumbled between settings. One shot is exposing the foreground and the other for the moon.

The Blizzard of ‘26 has surely delivered some of the most intense snow I’ve ever seen! I can only think of 1, maybe 2 storms in my life that compare, and we still have another night’s worth of snow to go.
After shoveling the driveway, I managed to get this view of Providence’s Elmhurst neighborhood. Stay warm, and safe out there PVD!

Saturday night’s (nearly) Full Snow Moon rising behind the Rhode Island State House.
As I was leaving the house to pick up dinner I noticed the moon rising, so I grabbed my camera in the hopes I’d get a nice opportunity to photograph it on the way. I’ve spent countless hours planning so many of my photos, yet this one was just dumb luck.

It was a balmy -1 to start the day in Providence this morning, which reminded me of the coldest weather I’ve ever gone out to photograph. In 2023, a polar vortex sent us -30 wind chills and sea smoke over the Providence River! It was amazing to see in person.

The Full Wolf Moon rising over Pomham Rocks Lighthouse Saturday evening. Clouds were basically everywhere else in the sky, except for a small window, allowing the first full moon of the year to briefly appear. The festive lights on the lighthouse made for a nice added touch to the scene too!

ICM in the Fall
I tried something different in my back yard, during peak fall color here in Rhode Island. Intentional Camera Movement, or ICM, can take ordinary scenes and transform them into something completely different. I love what came from these shots of a lone tree that each year has incredible foliage. Check out my YouTube video on ICM, and how I made these photos. The link is in my bio!

Okay one last photo from the Aurora celebration this week! This was the shot I originally set out for during Tuesday night’s event. Chase Farm is a beautiful location in Lincoln and this tree had been in my head for a shot of the Aurora if the opportunity presented itself.
The colors and intensity had faded a bit by the time I got there for a photo (can’t believe I’m even saying that based on how incredible it still looks here). It’s been awesome seeing the photos others were able to get this week too!!

More from Tuesday night’s incredible showing of the Aurora in Rhode Island! There was about a 30 minute stretch where the sky was bursting with color, the most vivid I’ve ever seen the Aurora in person.
Swipe to see a peaceful view of some small clouds rolling through during the peak substorm we saw around 9 PM. And, if you want to know more about how to photograph the Aurora check the video in my bio!

Tuesday night’s display of the Aurora Borealis delivered an incredible show! It was windy and cold out there but worth it for the remarkable view. This is from the Butterfly Farm in Lincoln. Rhode Island.
If you’ve ever seen photos like this and wondered how you can photograph the Aurora yourself, I can help you! Check out my video on How to Photograph the Aurora on YouTube (link in my bio).
