🏔️Beinn Narnain & Beinn Ìme on a summers day in March
ft. my favourite bird, a raven, circling so breathtakingly close I almost cried at the beauty of the moment
According to the brilliant voice of Ailig ‘Bhaltos’ MacDonald on WalkHighlands - Beinn Ìme means the butter mountain, referring to when butter was made at the high shielings / Àirighs.
I’m so looking forward to resuming my butter and cheese making work at the high shielings in Norway this summer with fiddle in tow

Hamarsbøen • Hallingdal
Åse Liv and Lars welcomed me to work with them for three busy weeks this summer at Hamarsbøen Støl near Hallingskarvet. We milked the cows twice a day and with help from friendly neighbours herded the cows home from their daily grazing adventures.
With such beautiful and biodiverse pasture for the cows to graze and calm environment they seemed very happy and healthy, producing the most delicious ice cream, cheese and rømme.
The støl was such a community hub up in the mountain valley of Havsdalen. Visitors walked, cycled and drove by most days and would often lean through the window during milking to ask questions or try a sample of fresh milk.
I found myself singing along to the drone of the milking machine a lot, when I wasn’t asking Lars hundreds of questions, and I even wrote some new tunes this way.
Before heading to the farm I didn’t know anyone there, I took a real chance and so did they - I am so glad! You could not find more generous, kind and passionate people than the Hamarsbøen family 🐄🌸🎻
✨Workshop - Rose Logan✨
Perthshire fiddler, Rose Logan, has spent time immersed in both Scottish and Norwegian folk music. She looks forward to sharing her passion for the tunes, stories and traditions of these countries during her workshop ‘From Shieling to Støl’ exploring music which accompanied daily life at summer grazing pastures, which will take place on Sunday 16th November 🎻

Sandalen • Vang i Valdres
Far into the mountain valley of Sandale in the foothills of Jotunheimen, up at 1000m. Milking cows by hand, making cheese and butter, running a cafe all without running water, electricity or phone signal. Sparstadstølen is a special and beautiful place where reindeer, birds, horses, goats and cows roam freely in happy coexistence
This was one of the most enriching and memorable of my farming times so far
I learned so much from Katharina and Nils during my short stay and left feeling hugely inspired by their passion and work
The main thing that comes to mind as I reflect back on my stay is the many wonderful and interesting people i met and chatted with. Visitors to the cafe, passing hillwalkers, French agri students and my dear friends over the mountain @heensbakken . A remote place which could easily have felt isolating was in fact the very opposite
and now onward to Hallingdal…
