Exhibited in the massive subterranean space beneath London’s Farsight Collective, sonic arts project Disinformation exhibits the “National Grid” sound installation. With a nod to the Farsight Collective’s extreme proximity to the guitar shops in nearby Denmark Street, the pure musical note of live mains electricity, the raw mains hum that manifests in malfunctioning guitar amplifiers, guitar pick-ups and guitar leads, is transformed into a rhythmically pulsing, hypnotic and immersive low-frequency sound mass - a monolithic, ultra-minimalist soundtrack for the creative genius of electrification.
Extrapolating the artist and campaigner Gustav Metzger’s concepts of Auto-Destructive and Auto-Creative Art, and Link Wray, The Who and Jimi Hendrix’s work with damaged amplifiers, smashed guitars and audio feedback, “National Grid” exploits a technical “error” of conventional music and studio recording practice, exploring whole new vistas of sonic art - articulating the architectural acoustics of its own exhibition space, which visitors “play” through their movements through and interactions with the acoustic space.
As Jimi Hendrix said after his legendary performance at the Woodstock Festival, “we play it the way the air is in America today - the air is slightly static”. As the sci-fi author William F. Temple wrote in 1951, “the air itself seemed to be oscillating with electricity”.
In 2013, Trebuchet Magazine described “National Grid” as “one of the most important and impressive sound art works of recent times”.
