Did you know...
In 2022, we launched our Roots "Norwester" Navy Strength Gin (54.5%) by recreating the historic gunpowder 'proof' test.
Complete with naval bunting, a Sea Cadets cutter, cannons, muskets, a retired Naval Commander and Scottish drummer, we blew up our first ever bottle of Navy Strength gin in a howitzer shell on #WorldGinDay.
Gunpowder proofing was used by the Royal Navy for almost a century to test the strength of rum and gin purchased for voyages to ensure merchants weren't diluting their stocks for larger sales volumes.
"Proofing" was made by igniting a sample of the spirit with gunpowder. If it was diluted with water, it wouldn't combust.
Fast forward to the invention of the Sykes hydrometer in 1803, and we see the proof scale used to formally measure alcohol strength against density.
Roots Norwester Navy Strength Gin has the addition of giant kelp and hemp seed in further connection to the Royal Navy as illustrated on our label (sacks, sails, ropes, cannons, gunpowder and a NW weather system).
Tastes pretty good too.
ROOTS - NOT JUST ANOTHER GIN.
