Wright's random rants, part II: Some time ago I commented on a friend band's post. Dropped a bit of banter, if you like. The result? I got an offended, long reply from a member of the band's social media team, who was upset because of my banter. Ever since I've been thinking. What is a band's social media account, run by social media specialists or label people, other than a one way marketing device? These platforms offer a chance for direct interaction between bands and fans. Social media was supposed to unite people. This tech isn't uniting us. In a world that only sees value in profit, monetary gain, all these great innovations are mainly there to sell more stuff (mostly useless bulk), competing of attention in the digital universe, whose users are seen merely as consumer cattle. Our Insta and Facebook are entirely run by the band. You can reach us directly through a dm. That's a positive. The other side of the coin? Our social media is entirely run by the band. Meaning the content is irregular and moody. I have a passion for music. I feel very uncomfortable marketing our own art. There is a demand for bands to create content, to please the algorithms. Even the music media have gone from writing about the actual art to reporting the engagement a band's content is creating and how many billion followers artist x has on FlipFlop. We just had an amazing pre-production camp working on the new songs. I promised social media content for our label. But when in the thick of things, sucked into the creative flow with my band bros, laying down the instruments in order to document the moment just bursts the creative bubble and kills the momentum for me. From being in a completely intimate, intuitive, ultra sensitive state you go to performing, posing, being self aware. And just like that, the magic is gone. I couldn't do it. Rootbrain is all about the magic of the moment. Journey over destination. That might be a cliché, but for this band it's the core principle. I look around and the tempo of the society is ever accelerating. Where are we running? Could we pause for a moment and check the course? Every single day 50 000 new songs produced entirely by AI, are uploaded to Deezer. That's 34% of all new music uploaded to the platform. And this is not just Deezer, Spotify and others are equally into this. The Spotify owner talks of music as content and artists get 0,003 cents per stream. Some people still get rich with music, but it sure ain't the musicians. 97% of people couldn't separate the AI music from the music made by real human beings. (Source: www.teosto.fi) I'm not gonna fight this AI windmill as the problem. It's a powerful tool, when used the right way. Unfortunately I don't think that's happening. And the progress is so fast the legislation around it is unable to match the pace. This beast has no limits, no boundaries. That's what happened with the digitalisation of music too. And look what happened? Touring bands turned into travelling shirt salesmen since the art itself lost it's value. The problem is the system we live in. As long as the meaning of life is to maximize profit on every field of life, even great inventions will be used only for that purpose. Is this really the world and the values we want? And really? We really want AI to make our art? So the purpose of art is also just to maximize profit? Really? We could do so much better. Money comes to money and I tend to go the opposite way. Still trying to make art from the heart and putting effort into building wholesome album entities and other obsolete things, in the knowledge average persons concentration span is like 10 seconds.
