After two decades in academia, I came to New York for a summer hiatus and began walking the city streets, experiencing the world through a new lens, both literal and metaphorical. I fell in love with the city and with photography, and the hiatus became a new life. Like myself, my art inhabits multiple worlds and their thresholds — the inner and the outer, the visible and the invisible, the real and the imagined, the familiar and the dissonant, the visual and the literary. How fortunate am I to have two of my favorite photographs exhibited in two wonderful festivals this week! First up is the @dsp_festival , which just wrapped up yesterday in Dublin. I was unable to attend because of visa logistics, but was very much there in spirit, trying to take in what I could of the fantastic program! Huge thanks to @aradeza1 , @alex_uniqueye , @cornafeanlynam , @on_the_street_with_anna , and @womenstreetphotographers for kindly sharing photos and videos of my displayed photograph. Congratulations to all exhibiting photographers and heartfelt thanks to the festival organizers @desbstreet and @reflexlens , and all the volunteers.

In the aftermath of the high of the Women Street Photographers Festival this past weekend, I had a crazy brainwave. I asked 6 women street photographers to photograph me in and around my home. Perhaps this was an exercise in vanity, like most things are, but I was mainly curious to see how their lenses would capture me in a space where I make a lot of self-portraits. And I happened to have a red dress on. Couldn’t hurt. Here are the photos we made together — some candid, some posed, all unplanned. I want to give a shoutout to two wonderful humans who made this creative camaraderie possible. The first, of course, is @gulnara.samoilova , who started a community whose ripples are felt in so many ways within our minds and across the world. The seven of us wouldn’t have found our way to each other that evening without the sense of community Gulnara has sparked and painstakingly nurtured. The second is @geraldslota , one of the most creative minds I have met and who I am currently taking a class with (along with two other WSPs @parvathi_kumar_photography and @alexavandewalle ). The class is called F**k the Photo, and I wouldn’t have had the brainwave I did without Gerald’s homework prompt. The collage of the 6 photos of me ended up being my homework submission :-). Hello everyone! This is Roopsha, and I am excited to be curating the @wsp_nyc account going forward. Many thanks to @gulnara.samoilova for inviting me into this role. It’s a perfect space to engage in a creative dialogue around three things I love deeply — street photography, New York, and the @womenstreetphotographers community. For those who don’t know me, here’s a little introduction. After two decades in academia, I came to New York in 2023 for what was meant to be a short summer hiatus, and began walking the city streets with a camera, experiencing the world anew. What started as a pause soon grew into an enduring connection to both the city and photography. This connection deepened when I attended my first @womenstreetphotographers festival in 2024 and encountered this joyful, warm, and vibrant community. My street photography practice explores the spontaneous, everyday human condition through a conceptual lens. I am sharing a selection from one of my ongoing projects, I Too Am Untranslatable — a photographic exploration of the whispers, echoes, and residues of human presence in New York City. That’s enough about me; I am really looking forward to celebrating this incredibly talented community. See you around!
