What is a Dewan of Mysore? 🤯
If you think it sounds like a royal title, you’re half right. The Dewan was essentially the Prime Minister of the Mysore — the brain behind the throne.
While the Wodeyar Dynasty ruled as kings, it was the Dewan who advised, administered, and often shaped the future of the kingdom. Think of them as the people who turned vision into reality.
Between 1831 and 1881, the British directly controlled Mysore. But when power returned to the Wodeyars in 1881, a remarkable era began — one defined by an extraordinary lineup of Dewans.
These weren’t just bureaucrats. They were visionaries, reformers, and nation-builders. A literal roll of honour of some of the most accomplished individuals of their time. Sir M Visveswaraya, Madhav Rao, Sheshadri Iyer, Mirza Ismail.
Their decisions influenced governance, infrastructure, and the evolution of Mysore into one of the most progressive princely states in India.
So next time you hear “Dewan,” remember — they weren’t just advisors. They were the architects behind a kingdom’s success.
